The Jesuits educated the people through teachings of Christianity, and implemented primary and secondary schools in Brazil. 
The Jesuits were expelled in 1759, by the Portuguese Prime Minister, Marquis of Pombal--who made agriculture, and not education, Brazil's main focus!
