Cedrick: Why bother viewing literature through the Psychoanalytic perspective? Why should we still use it to analyze literature?

Viewing literature through the Psychoanalytic perspective is worth doing because it helps you understand the potential dreams, unconscious desire's and anxieties of the author. We should still use it to analyze literature to fully understand the meaning and lore of the book. By looking at the book as a manifestation of the authors own unconscious and desire, we can fully deepen our understanding of the meaning and desires of the characters and point of the story.

He then told her about how he had thought people were speaking about his crimes when they were committed.

Analyze this passage from the Psychoanalytic perspective. (Hint: What is Macbeth repressing?)

Macbeth is repressing his guilt from murdering Duncan. Though Macbeth thought the reward outweighed the risk, and thought he was ready to kill Duncan in order to be king, unconsciously he was not. This is why Macbeth seemingly heard voices, as he was unaware that we was extremely unprepared for this situation, and already is experiencing the mental repercussions of these actions.

Thompson argues that Lady Macbeth's suppressed emotions is the motive behind the tragedies that occur in Macbeth. Lady Macbeth doesn't have any companion that she has an emotional connection with besides Macbeth. Her isolation is what leads her to be self-destructive because unlike Macbeth she doesn't have people or things to care for and worry about.

Textual evidence is evidence found in a text/story, In the Psychoanalytic Criticism of Macbeth, Thompson's most effective evidence revolves around Thompson's idea that lady Macbeth lets, " her unconscious work on her and betray her in her dreams. Thompson also emphasized that "it does not seem accidental that her mental fragility increases as the bond between husband and wife weakens." The idea that Lady Macbeth's "valor of her tongue is not the valor of her heart and that her true "Womanly nature, her compassion, humanity and cowardice" show in her dreams as her unconscious shows itself.
