Citizens of the United States and USSR lived in perpetual fear of a nuclear war between the US and USSR. Mixed with the fear, was a deep sense of patriotism. This led the people of both nations to undertake in ambitiously competitive construction and research such as the Space Race (where the USSR got the first man in space, and the first satellite (Sputnik), and the US landed the first man on an extraterrestrial object (the Moon).

Although there was no direct war between the USSR and the US, there was numerous 'Proxy wars'. These 'proxy wars' were instigated by either powers, and was used typically to exert their influence. This was essentially, a war of ideology. There are examples of this in wars and conflicts such as; The Korean War (DPRK and RoK), Vietnam War (Vietcong and Republic of Vietnam), and Cuba (26th of July Movement, and Cuba (and later Cuba and Brigade 2506 (Cuban pro-Capitalist revolutionaries)))

After disagreements between the Soviet Union and the other Allied Nations, Germany was divided into the western and eastern side. Berlin was also divided in the same way. The Western side was democratic and had a more prosperous economy . The Eastern side was communist as established by the Soviet Union. German citizens living in the Eastern side could not escape to the democratic west due to the Soviet Union building the Berlin wall that divided Berlin in two.
Citizens on the Eastern side had their freedom denied by the Soviets and around 5000 people were killed for attempting to cross the Berlin Wall. The Eastern and Western citizens finally united in November 10 1989 when the Soviet Empire collapsed.
