Berlin was also divided in the same way. The Western side was democratic and had a more prosperous economy . The Eastern side was communist as established by the Soviet Union. German citizens living in the Eastern side could not escape to the democratic west due to the Soviet Union building the Berlin wall that divided Berlin in two.
Citizens on the Eastern side had their freedom denied by the Soviets and around 5000 people were killed for attempting to cross the Berlin Wall.
