The first is the letter I sent to parents at the beginning of the year.

We read the first ten minutes of every class period (except when we have tests or Timed Writings), we calculate our reading rates on per-book basis, keep daily/weekly reading rate logs, keep a reader's comp book; I do a book talk once a week. I'm about to schedule reading conferences (I didn't want to do those during reading time because it felt distracting and I wanted to model the reading). If you have any questions, I'd be happy to try to help.

This is a color-coding practice for ARIS+ writing. I used the short answer from the English 2 Unit 2B Assessment which my students had taken the previous week. I did not return the SAR they had already written, instead having them redo the SAR entirely. I had them color code their response. Then, only after they were finished, I returned their original response and had them color code it as well. They compared their answers, and most students' responses improved drastically.

Megan Maxwell shared this idea at a training this summer, and I thought it was a great idea for student writing.

Often times a student will ask us for a book recommendation. On this website, type in a title or author that you enjoyed and a list of other possible titles you might like are generated. I like it because it's a quick list of titles you can easily share; another site to try besides GoodReads. - Copeland
