Dead End in Norvelt by Jack Gantos

This activity will help build the students' overall comprehension of the book as well as provide them with an opportunity to recall important characters and events from the book after reading it.

Students will write down the kind of information that is normally featured in an obituary. Have the students recall and reread one of the obituaries that Miss Volker writes for the Norvelt News. Students will then write their own obituaries for an old toy. Students will be encouraged to use personal information and possibly make it humorous, but keep it appropriate.

The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate

This activity will help the students engage with the text in ways that will support their comprehension and understanding while reading the book.

Students will look at the different personality traits and physical characteristics of the main characters throughout the book. They will pay attention to and make note of the characters' specific traits, what makes each character unique, and why they think that the author chose to create each character the way she did. Students will then share and compare their notes with their classmates.
