This engraving shows the Irish Immigrants getting ready to leave Queenstown port in Cork for the United States. The artist wanted to explain what migration was like when people looked at the artwork. Migrating and leaving everything behind was very difficult to do.

People from Ireland came to American for several reasons. Push factors include the Potato Famine/ mass starvation in Ireland. The Potato Famine caused many deaths due to starvation and loss of food and crops. Push factors from the people of Ireland were they had the opportunity to get higher wages in America. The wage ratio was .39 , in America the ratio was 2% .

This photograph was taken to show that the immigrants could only take only what they could carry in order to start their new lives. People even left their families behind as well.

There are multiple push and pull factors due to why Irish Immigrants came to America. One push factor that influenced the people of Ireland was the Environmental factors that were in Ireland. The environment was called the "Year without Summer." Heavy rain and cold temperatures froze over ruining all crops such as potato crops, oats, wheat and caused many disease. A pull factor was to escape natural disasters, death, wanted safer environments and poverty.

(Museum of the City of New York)
What we can see in the photograph are immigrants in the process of relocating to the United States. The people in the photograph appear to be fatigued, perhaps due to lack of nutrition. There are many things that would make these people put themselves through such conditions. A primary push factory for the Irish immigrants is the environment issues, mainly the unpredictable food supplies. Famines were common with the "Irish Potato Famine" being the most notable. This can also be seen as pull factor. Not only does the United States have a reliable food supply, their climate is much more consistent.

(Illustrated London News/Hulton Archive/Getty Images)
fnjskgnjkngdsgnfdvnfsigdsfo
The Illustration depicts a famine-era coffin ship carrying passengers. This illustration's main push factors are environmental and social. They go hand in hand because the environmental side would be the possibilities of future famines since they have already gone through so many. The social side is the fear shared by the immigrants. The unpredictable state of their homeland led to the uncertainty of those living there. The United States offered a solution to both of those problems with a solid economy and little to no history of environmental disasters.

An excerpt from a summary of the era’s arguments for and against immigration policy reform, designed for debate teams, 1920.

The main push or pull factor found in this argument is the political factor. The reason for the Irish immigration was the lack of employment. Unemployment was rampant and the United States had a huge amount of freedom associated with it. It made perfect sense for the Irish people and the argument was against that because it was for the benefit of them and not the country itself.

The Irish needed food and places to work so they could provide for their family. America provided the pull factors in these forms.

The push factors that this image shows is the way that the Irish needed jobs and sources of income. They left because many were poor and starving and Ireland was prone to natural disasters and weather anomalies. America had many open jobs to pull the Irish to the newly forming country but there was a lot of Irish discrimination. They were seen as lazy drunks so companies wouldn't hire them. Many Irish did not know about their discrimination so they still fled to the country in search of jobs.

The immigrant gives examples of the horrors of the countries that people fled from and he shows how great America is. That is how many pull factors come into play. He called America "The most blessed country in the world" and talks about the opportunities to become rich in this land. He also glorifies our government and shows tells about how well off the country is saying that you will never have to struggle from hunger again.
