Call to Adventure

When summer ended I dreaded the next day. I had to sleep early and not sleep in. At 6:10 am the next morning, my alarm clock went off. I hit the snooze button, rejecting the call of high school. But when the alarm clock rang in my ears again, I rose from my bed to get ready for high school.

In stories of the hero's call to adventure, someone or something beckons them to begin their legendary adventure. In my case, the call was the alarm clock. At first, the hero resists the call, like I did by hitting the snooze button. But in the end, the hero eventually accepts their quest. I accepted the alarm clock's call and I got ready to school.

Threshhold

In the car, we drove to high school for the first time. There was a lot of traffic because many of the parents wanted to witness their child's first day to high school. I was dropped of near the student union where everybody who was dropped of enters. This was my threshold. I had to leave the comfort of home and middle school and arrive at the unknown world of high school. I walked up to the student union and walked through the doors of high school to receive my schedule.

In the hero's journey, hero's have to pass a doorway that borders their ordinary world to the unfamiliar world. On the first day of high school, the threshold was the student union. I left the comfort and familiar home and middle school to arrive at high school.

Abyss

The abyss of the first semester of high school was the finals. We tested for two hours straight at a time. The finals included nothing but fifty question tests and unused muscles. It was where I would be the most stressed and frustrated while I tried my best to decide if I answered this question right and if I answered it the best I could.

While the hero faces the abyss, they go through the hardest part of their quest. It is where the hero wants to quit more than anything, but they know they have to proceed. During the finals, the feelings of needing to stretch and anxiety of if I passed the finals mixed together to create my abyss.

Gift of the Gods

After the painful abyss full of testing, I received a gift of the gods. This gift was winter break. After dealing with the most painful week of finals, we got a three week break full of Christmas and New Year's. I got literal gifts from Christmas.

After the hero defeats the abyss, they usually receive a gift of the gods. My gift was gifts from Christmas and the winter break itself.

Tris's Call to Adventure

Tris's call to adventure was choosing Dauntless as her faction. Dauntless was the unfamiliar world that she had to travel to and leave Abnegation. She didn't reject Dauntless, but she had an internal battle about whether or not she should leave Abnegation or be free. In the end, during the Choosing Ceremony, she chose Dauntless.

Hero's before their journey, have a call to their adventure. Tris was called by choosing Dauntless. By becoming Dauntless, she would be trained to become a soldier that would prepare her for the future battle.

Tris's Threshold

Tris had to pass a threshold to go to Dauntless. She took the nonstop train to travel to Dauntless. This train carried her away from her familiar home of Abnegation to the unfamiliar Dauntless.

The threshold in hero's journeys are the borders between the familiar world and the unknown world. Tris rode a train that transferred the settings from familiar Abnegation that's all about selflessness to the unknown world of Dauntless that's all about bravery and has a different culture where you can look into mirrors and eat meat.

Tris's Abyss

Tris's abyss in the Divergent series was when Jeanine experimented on her in Erudite. Tris didn't feel or care about her future because of the pain she endured in Erudite and throughout the series. She was "reborn" when Peter gave gave her the paralyzing serum and Tris thought she was dead but still conscious. She realized that she didn't want to die.

Every hero in the hero's journey goes through the abyss where they feel like they want to quit the most. Tris wanted to quit life and so she surrendered herself at Erudite and expected a soon death.

Tris's Gift of the Gods

Tris's gift of the gods, after defeating the challenge of the abyss was a healthier relationship with Tobias. Before surrendering to Erudite to stop Jeanine from killing other Dauntless members, Tris and Tobias fought a lot about going and not going to Erudite. After Erudite, she realized she didn't want to die anymore and wasn't as depressed as she was before, making Tobias and herself happier together.

Hero's often get a gift of the gods after defeating the challenge of the abyss. Tris's gift was being able to be happy and be happier with Tobias.
