Other colonies such as the Carolinas, Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey received charters to be colonies for the purpose of providing proprietors with land and power.  (Pg. 49) Proprietary colonies often times had power focused on small groups of people, usually the proprietors and their close supporters. This caused separation and conflict between North and South Carolina due to differences in wealth between the two areas. (Pg.51) The presence of colonists from Barbados in southern colonies increased the use and presence of African slaves in the area compared to the rest of the colonies.
