Ulysses 31 is a 1980's cartoon combing ancient Greek myth with space travel and science fiction.

In this episode Ulyesses (Odysseus) is tricked by the gods, and meets the three Fates: - Clotho (Spinner), Lachesis (Allotter), and Atropos (Inflexible). Clotho spins the thread of human fate, Lachesis dispenses it, and Atropos cuts the thread to determine an individual's moment of death.

In the piece I like the rapid change from from life to death, and being transported from the naive to the frightening.

I really like expressive nature of the puppets - although they don't talk in any recognisable language, it is easy to understand what they are saying.

So glad I got to see the actual performance at the Barbican Theatre! I really enjoyed the visceral effects and thed disembodied body parts, plus the fast action and the use of sounds to create language. The squishy rubbery puppets inspired my use of latex in the degree show pieces.

I really admire the nightmarish quality of this work created by soft sculptures, where the bodyesque forms transform furniture into grotesque forms. In other context the female bodies might seem voluptuous, but here they seem disturbing and threatening.

The work is inspired by a song about the wife of a gangster who poisoned herself in Room 202.

This episode features the boy who disobeyed his mother and sucked his thumb, and consequently had a visit from the master tailor.

From a Freudian prospective the tale explores castration as the consequence of enjoying oral pleasure.
