The co-learners need not have to be present at the same place to share their experiences, learning and discuss. And also gives a scope for peer learning beyond geographies and across cultures. It also helps in collaborating with peer learners on online platform and maybe work on some common assignment or project. Thus, helping to creating a environment to nurture 21st century skills which includes global collaboration as an important skill. 
Online learning can also also gives scope to learners to construct their own learning in the process, as it is not entirely teacher-driven.
