He had promised Hermia in marriage to Demetrius, who loves her, but Lysander had already won Hermia’s heart, which makes her refuse to obey her father and marry Demetrius. Her father demands the law to punish Hermia if she refuses to obey. The law states that if she refuses she will expect to be sent to a nunnery or sentenced to death. Hermia and Lysander discuss the trials that must be faced and they come up with a plan. Which is for them to scape and get married at Lysander’s aunt’s house who lives seven leagues from Athens and dotes Lysander like a son, and because the house is outside of Athens, they would be free of the Athenian law.

A group of poor laborers gathers at Peter Quince's home in a different area of Athens, away from Theseus's palace, to practice a play that they want to present at the lavish party that will take place before Theseus and Hippolyta are married. The Most Lamentable Comedy and Most Cruel Death of Pyramus and Thisbe, which relates the tale of two lovers who are parted by their parents' dispute and converse at night through a hole in the wall, is the play Quince tells the group they are to present. Pyramus kills himself out of despair after concluding that Thisbe had been slain by the lion after discovering the torn robe. Quince assigns them the following roles: Thisbe's mother, Robin Starveling, Tom Snout, Pyramus, Bottom as Pyramus, Snug the lion, and Francis Flute as Thisbe. He claims that having a female voice would make him a fantastic Thisbe, and having a roar would make him a fantastic lion. To avoid frightening anyone, Down suggests that he might have cooed softly like a nightingale, but Quince persuades him once more that he can only play Pyramus. The group eventually disperses and decides to get together the following evening in the woods to practice their work.

Puck is searching for a flower to create a love potion for Helena. Demetrius curses Helena and tries to prevent their marriage. Puck arrives with the flower, which serves as the potion. Oberon tells Puck to find an Athenian youth pursuing a lady and apply the juice to his eyelids, hoping to make him fall in love with her. After Titania falls asleep, Oberon uses the juice to chant a spell. Lysander and Hermia sleep separately, and Puck finds them sleeping together. He assumes they are the Athenians, and Puck spreads the potion on Lysander's eyelids, calling him a "churl." The potion helps Helena fall in love with Oberon.

Helena follows Demetrius across the glade at the same time. Once more, he belittles her and demands that she stop following him. Despite her protests that she fears the dark, he storms out without her. Helena says she's breathing too hard and stays behind to lament her unfulfilled love. She wakes up Lysander when she notices him dozing off. As the potion starts to work, Lysander develops a strong romantic interest in Helena. He starts complimenting her appearance and expressing his unwavering love for her. Helena tells him he loves Hermia, but he doesn't believe her. He says Hermia means nothing to him. Helena becomes enraged because she thinks Lysander is making fun of her. With a smirk, she walks out, Lysander trailing behind. She leaves in a huff, and Lysander follows after her. Hermia soon wakes and is shocked to find that Lysander is gone. She stumbles into the woods to find him.

Hermia

Who are the characters so far in the story? Which one do you choose and Why?

Thesus: Duke of Athens

Hippolyta: Amazon Queen

Oberon: King of the Fairies

Titania: Queen of the Fairies

Puck: Mischievous fairy

Nick Bottom: A weaver

Egeus: Father of Hermia

Lysander: Loves Hermia

Hermia: Loves Lysander

Demetrius: Suitor of Hermia

Helena: Loves Demetrius

                          Hermia

For my character analysis I chose Hermia because for me she is a character who so far is going through a lot and I would love to see what her outcome in the story is at the end. Also she is a character in which a lot can be talked about, and I want to express my point of view in the situations she goes through.

One of Hermia's character traits is that she is a strong, independent woman. She is in love with a man named Lysander, but her father, Egeus, commands her to marry Demetrius instead. Hermia refuses, confidently opposing her father. Despite her self-possession, Hermia is still affected by the whims of fate during the play. Although she is obligated to do what her father commands, she is willing to risk her life and leave in order to follow her own desires. In addition, Hermia's strength can be seen in the way she stays true to herself. I would also describe her as a feisty, confident young woman from Athens.

The play ends with the fairies blessing their marriage beds. So, at least for Lysander and Hermia, A Midsummer Night's Dream has a wonderful, happy ending. They, we can really hope, will truly live happily ever after.

The story of A Midsummer Night's Dream is driven by the longing for and the struggle to attain well-matched love. As Theseus, Duke of Athens, speaks lyrical about his impending marriage to Hippolyta, the play begins on a note of their desire. When the problems of other partners take center stage, the primary fight begins. From this point on, the story revolves around the conflict between the characters' love for the wrong person and their true love. Since each character has a different desire, the determination each character has to achieve what they want is what also causes the conflict.

The preparations for the wedding of Theseus, the duke of Athens, and the captured Amazon Hippolyta are underway. Hermia's father wants her to marry Demetrius, while Lysander wants her to marry. Egeus orders Theseus to put Hermia under Athenian rule and threaten her death if she rejects Demetrius. Lysander and Hermia plan to leave Athens, but their scheme is revealed to Helena, who is in love with Demetrius. Meanwhile, a group of working men prepare a play about the tragic love-story of Pyramus and Thisbe. Character conflict arises as Oberon and Titania find a young Indian boy Titania refuses to hand over. Puck enchants Titania with a flower, and Lysander and Hermia sleep apart. Helena meets Lysander, who confesses his love for her.

The interesting thing about all this is how all these conflicts ironically end up complementing each other, somehow like a puzzle. Seeing how Egeus’s attitude ended up causing most of all this, turns the reader to blame him. His attitude towards Hermia’s situation and wanting to take full control over her caused her to make an escape and make her own decision. So when doing so she got herself into more trouble. Just when we thought things could work out for them it just got worse. By pouring the love liquor on Lysander’s eyes, his love for Hermia got twisted for him to love Helena, by accident. Although this action was a mix up and it wasn’t on purpose, the true feelings of Lysander still got affected and the readers will later on see the consequences this will bring with it. Readers will subsequently witness the consequences of this action, even though it was an error and not intentional, but it nonetheless altered Lysander's actual sentiments.

In this play we can see how things took a twist and they weren’t going as planned or expected. But at the end it all worked out. All things have a purpose, although we may not see it at the time.

The tradesman's absence sets the scenario. When the Flute inquires as to whether the play would be performed without Bottom, Quinc responds that someone else may portray Pyramus instead of Bottom because he is the most suitable actor in all of Athens for the role. Snug enters with some intriguing news: the Duke and two or three other men and women have tied the knot. He continues by saying that they would have "all been made men" if their play had been accepted. According to Flute, Bottom would have gotten a hefty payment from the Duk for his flawless portrayal of Pyramus in the play. Suddenly everything. When Bottom returned, the men who had been depressed suddenly became thrilled.

The setting for this act is Theseus' palace. The three wedded couples are enjoying food and entertainment as part of their celebration. A sheet of paper with a list of potential shows they could see is brought in by Philostrate. Theseus asks the couples to select the item that sounds the most intriguing after reading the list to them. The play Pyramus and Thisbe piques their interest. As Quince appears, he opens the play by reading the prologue. The couples discuss all of their inquiries regarding the upcoming play. The action begins with an introduction to the characters in the prologue.

Then, Snout, who is playing the wall, emerges and gestures with his fingers to the opening where Pyramus and Thisbe, the lovers, whisper. Bottom's character Pyramus overacts, peeking over the wall to find Thisbe. When Thisbe shows up, they have a conversation, exchange a kiss through the wall, and decide to meet again later. The lion then makes an appearance and introduces himself to the crowd as Snug. The Athenians value his sincerity. Thisbe emerges in the moonlight, seeking her beloved; however, the lion catches her and rips off her coat before she can flee. When Pyramus enters and sees her bleeding cloak, he stabs himself believing his beloved has passed away.

The action immediately cuts to Puck, who is soon joined by Titania, Oberon, and the other fairies in a joyful dance. The three couples are blessed by Oberon, who wishes them peace, safety, many offspring, and long and happy marriages. They depart, leaving Puck to conclude the play with a soliloquy in which he advises the audience to pretend the play is all a dream if they have been insulted or find anything in it offensive.

Happy ending or Sad ending ?

As far as I know, all the characters in the play have a happy ending. The four lovers get married at the end. Hermia and Lysander get married happily and according to the rules of Athens. Helena finally finds her true love after risking her own life by going into the woods. Demetrius stops chasing Hermia because he realizes that she doesn't belong to him and that she's always in love with Lysander. And in doing so, she finds herself in love with someone who's always loved her from the start. Theseus was really excited about getting married to Hippolyta and they go on their honeymoon. It's nice to see how happy they are at the end. Bottom and Titania finally settle their custody dispute over Indian boy and they bless the newly married couple. The tradesmen played the play exactly according to plan. The audience thought it was funny and entertaining. Their fear that the ladies would be scared by their acts was unfounded. Robin was able to fix all his mistakes and had a chance to ask for forgiveness. So as we can se all the characters even though some of them went through as much trouble than others, at the end all the pieces of the puzzle fell right into place.

Characters’ Conflict Resolution

Hermia and Lysander:

Their main conflict was resolved. What they had been fighting for since the very beginning, after all the bumps along the way. They finally got married and had their happy ending. First they couldn’t because Theseus applied the Athenian law on Hermia, but at the end he decided to overrule Egeus, so they could have the happy ending they deserved.

Demetrius and Helena:

They were both following a love that was not theirs at first, but they eventually married happily. However, I believe that their struggle was repressed because Demetrius loves Helena for the love juice rather than for actual love. Only Oberon and Puck are aware of this, but things may alter in the future if Demetrius is unexpectedly released from the enchantment.

Titania and Oberon:

Their conflict was becaus of their disagreement over the Indian child resolved as a result of Oberon's plot. Oberon's strategy was a little dangerous, but it worked wonderfully, and Titania had no idea she was the one who cast the enchantment. Considering this, their issue was actually overcome, resulting in a happy finale for them.

Theseus and Hippolyta:

At the end of the play, they joyfully marry and have little conflict. Hippolyta did not appear to be as excited as Theseus about getting married at first, but Hippolyta didn’t show any objections during the play.

Egeus:

Hermia's father had to deal with her daughter's wish to marry a man who did not appeal to him from the start. Then he has to deal with her daughter's strong personality, who decides to flee the Athenian laws that are being imposed on her. Even though we may expect everything to go Egeus' way at the end of the play, the opposite occurs. Hermia married Lysander rather than Demetrius after Theseus ordered the four lovers to marry and disregarded Egeus' will. Egeus, unlike most characters, did not get his way and had to accept that her daughter would marry Lysander rather than Demetrius.

Robin Goodfellow:

Robin encountered various issues when he misidentified Lysander and Demetrius and subsequently had to correct his faults. Despite this, he was able to properly correct them and ask the audience for forgiveness towards all th mistakes he made throughout the play. Looking at the bright side of his blunders, he enabled the four loves to marry and have a happy ending. So, even though Robin resolved the play's major issue, it appears that he also had a happy ending.

In this act, at the very end we see how Puck comes clean with the audience and asks for forgiveness towards all the mistakes he made throughout the play. It cought my attention that he did this since throughout the play we could see how he kept making mistakes but never said sorry, he just tried to fix it. But him coming clean to the audience was a very nice touch to end the play.
