Motivation for me can be very fluid moving from extrinsic and intrinsic. This sometimes depends on the project, goal, or group that I'm positioned with. Currently, I feel motivated to pursue my degree for extrinsic reasons: professional advancement, economically motivated, competitive in nature, and want to get good A's on all my work). I'm also intrinsically motivated: (cognitive interest; learning for the sake of learning). I definitely identify with the video in having a mix match of what science knows and what business believes to be true with 'carrots and sticks' however, this trivializes work place power dynamics as not all places of employment are open to change such as the ROWE method mentioned in the film.

I have always been someone that has enjoyed learning. Currently, my motivators fit both an intrinsic value and an extrinsic one. I am pursuing a degree now for advancement in my career as well as for the sake of having higher education. I have always been someone that is naturally curious and so if I could be paid to be a lifelong student I would be. I also feel the need to pursue higher education so that I can be the best for the community of students that I teach. So I am pursuing higher education for those around me as well. During my childhood, the experiences I had in school and out of school shaped my passion to pursue not just higher education, but perform with excellence any task that I was given. Factors that motivate me: curiosity/respect/financial stability/paying it forward/having the influence to affect others in a positive way.

I am motivated to advance in my career. I got thrown into instructional design 2 years ago and had to teach myself a lot of instructional theories as well as how to use different software programs. I want to be able to connect this experience to actual theory and formalize my learning through this degree.
3. To use my learning to help others. I want to be able to help others reach their goals professionally and personally, but I feel I can only do that once I have enough knowledge and wisdom to share.
4. I like working with other people, so when learning is a social activity I feel more motivated to contribute to my thoughts and engage in conversation.
5. I am a first generation college student and the first one in my family to pursue a Master's degree. I want to prove to myself what I am capable of and also make my family proud.

My top motivations for learning are below:

1) My parents. My parents and I are immigrants of this country, and I have seen them sacrifice so much for me growing up. They have placed my wants and needs prior to their needs. Both my parents didn't receive a college degree, so during my adolescent years, I witnessed my parents work three to four jobs receiving little to no sleep. My identity as an only child coupled with being an Filipina American puts a lot of pressure on me to succeed. I refuse to fail because my parents are depending on me; I aspire to provide and give back to them.
2) Advocacy. Knowledge is power, and possessing the intellectual capital has provided me the access and opportunities to navigate spaces not historically offered to students like me with marginalized identities. As mentioned in a previous post, I knew in third grade that I needed to be an advocate for myself and my community using education as a tool although I did not have the proper language to articulate this; I felt it. I recognized this moment when I had to sign the "first day of school papers" for my parents because my parents did not have the time to read all the English because they were working multiple jobs, and they could not understand it well.
3) Visibility in leadership. You cannot become or aspire to be someone you cannot see. Within the past year and recent weeks, I've been told by students I supervise and first-year students in the Student Development Administration (SDA) program that they are thankful I am here. They see the work I do, and they are inspired by it because not often times do they see a strong, Asian American woman, Filipina American in higher education. Additionally, one of my resident assistants (RAs) told me that she was thankful that I was her supervisor because as a woman of color, she doesn't have to educate me on her experiences, struggles, and challenges. To her, I just understood because we shared that identity, and it impacted her a great deal because she felt supported through my language and actions that often times, she doesn't receive in the classroom by her instructors.
4) My future family. Continuous learning and education are critical for me to build a solid foundation for my future family. I'm neither married nor have kids currently, but I think about the educational privilege I carry. I want to take advantage of that, so my children will have the tools and resources they need in order to navigate this world easier than I did.
5) A purpose bigger than myself. Although challenging at times, I see my work and education to serve a larger purpose than myself. I want to create an impact in this world and contribute in a way that leaves it better than how I found it.

1.) Career advancement: currently working in higher education, it is a sad but true fact that if I want any kind of career advancement at all, I will need a master's degree. Most of the time, I will not be considered for a job because I don't have a master's, which I think is somewhat unfair, personally. If I didn't have this motivation, I honestly would not be in grad school.
2.) Career flexibility: Last year, I was set to begin the SDA program, which was unfortunately set back by a cancer diagnosis. Upon reflection, I realized that I really want to get back abroad. I felt TESOL would allow me the flexibility to work abroad if I wish while also allowing me to continue in higher education administration (particularly in international education) if I decide to continue on my current career path.
3.) Making up for the past: I had a very unsuccessful run in undergrad with poor grades and big problems. I'm hoping that I can redeem myself and prove that I can be successful in an educational program.
4.) Connecting with and honoring my grandparents' experiences: 3 of my grandparents were immigrants fleeing war-torn Europe. They came in their late teens with no English ability at all. They built their lives from the ground up and out of necessity, learned English where they could. I really want to have the opportunity to help people that are in my grandparent's position and allow them to fulfill their dreams for a better life.
5.) Connecting with my current students: Many of the international students I advise are in intensive academic English programs. I feel that the TESOL program is allowing me to better serve them outside the classroom and educate other administrators on how to best serve them.

Better understanding myself and my purpose in the world (learning challenges me to test my assumptions and to be open to new possibilities)
2.) Better understand others (by hearing others' stories I connect more deeply to their realities)
3.) Be a better instructor (the more of learn about my field of expertise the more I can share with my students and my passion is constantly being renewed)
4.)

The greatest current motivating factor for my learning is to advance my career. I am in school to get my administrative credentials so that I can transition into a career as a school principal. When looked at from this perspective, my motivation to return to school appears clear cut and one dimensional; however, there are deeper motivations behind my overarching goal. In addition to my positional career goal, I am motivated to be fulfilled in my work. I am perfectly happy in my job as a school teacher, but I feel that I could be doing more to improve education. Another motivation which drives me is my fiancé who inspires me every day to become a better version of myself and to continually push to maximize my potential. I am further motivated by the children I hope to have in the future, who I want to grow up with examples of hard work and accomplishment. My final motivator, which seems less noble, but is very real, is monetary. I want to be able to afford to buy a house in which I can raise a family and enough money to provide my children the opportunity to have the same experiences I had when growing up.
