In order to raise money for infrastructure and to pay for war materials, the confederates began printing paper currency in order to finance the war. Eventually the act of printing money grew out of hand, as counterfeiting and inflation became a major problem. The money that was printed was often used to repay debt.

The confederates overprinted money leading to inflation and a ballistic increase in the price of goods.

The Confederates began by borrowing money from the states and by issuing bonds in return for the profits that wealthy planters would have made after selling their crops. This was quite successful They also tried to borrow money from France and England, but this wasn't as successful because the Confederates began to lose.
Overall, 1/3 of the Confederate expenditure came from borrowing money, which is a significant amount.

Confederate - Taxes/Tariffs

Ultimately, taxing strategies, both internally and externally, were unsuccessfully implemented by the Confederate. All throughout the war, tariffs failed because of the Union blockade. As for internal taxes, the Confederate tried taxing a variety of goods, including real estate, the value of slaves, agricultural products, businesses, and income. They all failed, partly because of the state’s refusal to pay and partly because the war was impeding the government’s ability to collect the taxes. In the end, the Confederate only collected $200 million in taxes, a mere 9% of the total revenue.
