Eventually the act of printing money grew out of hand, as counterfeiting and inflation became a major problem. The money that was printed was often used to repay debt.

All throughout the war, tariffs failed because of the Union blockade. As for internal taxes, the Confederate tried taxing a variety of goods, including real estate, the value of slaves, agricultural products, businesses, and income. They all failed, partly because of the state’s refusal to pay and partly because the war was impeding the government’s ability to collect the taxes.
