Using the multimodal strategy of blackout poetry, I used a page from the book Lucy by Jamaica Kincaid to display a poem that reflects the power of unity in overcoming physical, cultural, or societal differences. This poem is intended to encourage friendship among people of diverse backgrounds. Living in an isolated world by surrounding yourself with only like-minded people is dangerous and hinders our ability to solve societal problems in an equitable manner. This novella, Lucy, is about a young woman who moves across the world and explores new perspectives of womanhood in a different country and culture entirely. With this multimodal strategy, I was able to construct meaning with a poem that correlates to theme of the text in which the words were provided, as well as readings from this course.
Students could use the following standard to gather information from various texts and manipulate them to create their own poetry.
3rd grade Social Studies standard: SSP .01 Gather information from a variety of primary and secondary sources, including printed materials (e.g., literary texts, newspapers, political cartoons, autobiographies, speeches, letters, personal journals)

This is a way for students to organize visuals of the cultural celebrations they have learned about. These examples are learned in the book called Let's Celebrate! Specials Days Around the World by Kate DePalma. This relates to my text set. Students can research these festivals to see the real-world representations of the festivals compared to the children illustrations in the book. Students can take it a step further by writing about how these celebrations are different or similar to the things they celebrate. They can share their collage and writing with the class.

For this assignment, I chose a graffiti board as my multi modal strategy. This strategy centers around my two chosen social justice standards which are ID.3-5.4 I can feel good about my identity without making someone else feel badly about who they are and DI.3-5.6 I like knowing people who are like me and different from me, and I treat each person with respect. The graffiti board activity will take place after my read aloud of “Not So Different” by Cyana Riley. Students will each come up with one identity that they feel is unique about them or an identity that is very important to them. Under this identity, students will write a brief one sentence explanation about what this identity means to them.

I chose kindergarten and my topic was about diversity, equity and inclusion. i used the book "All Are Welcomed" in my lesson to provide the young students with a story they could insert themselves into and comprehend how in school, there will be so many people who do not dress like you, look like you, speak like you or even eat the same foods as you, but in our Kindergarten classroom we are all friends!! This infographic can be placed in the wall on the classroom OR we can do a wall of all the students faces on it to show that we are different but all welcomed!

The activity I have picked for my multimodal strategy is a collage. The goal of this activity is for students to challenge biases that they feel are projected onto them. Certain aspects of our identity often contradict one another. We simply cannot fit into a box. Students will be given large sticky notes to create “I am… but I’m not…” or “I am… AND…” statements. They can be creative in their handwriting and add details/decorations to their notes. All of these notes will be kept anonymous and placed onto a big poster board that says “I am more than the box you put me in.” This activity aligns with Social Justice standard ID.K-2-3 I know that all my group identities are part of me-but that I am always ALL me as well as standard JU.K-2.11 I know my friends have many identities but they are always just themselves.
