To show that it is still an issue today is that this past summer there was the George Floyd situation. In this article, the author weighed in on how the Goerge Floyd situation affected the people of America. This is what they said, “The murder of George Floyd last year was another wake-up call for many Americans about racism in policing. It was also a reminder that past efforts to address racist police practices have failed repeatedly.” ("How Do We End Racism"). When the author said, “wake-up call” they meant that the people finally realized after such a long time that racism in policing is a big issue. That the people need to find ways to help support the cause and help end it.

Speaking of how to help, I recently interviewed a fellow student named Eddie Van der Merwe. I asked him how he could help with this cause. He said that he can donate to the BLM cause and even some charities that would help too, (Van der Merwe). So in case you were wondering how to help, the answer is to donate to the BLM cause and/or some charities that care for the cause as well. 

I also recently took a survey and an answer I got was them experiencing racism. It was really sad to hear. “I experienced it a lot in elementary school. Specifically, this one older kid used to call me yin yang and black and white cookie. it started when my mom started picking me up from school, and since she was African American, and I'm white, the older kids would call me those names.” (Smith) This just goes to show that racism, not just in policing, really does exist and can negatively affect someone else. This person was probably very sad or embarrassed because of these older kids that were being racist towards him. We have to end this so that other people don’t have to feel the way he did when the older kids were being racist to them.

If you witnessed someone being treated like this person from the survey, what should you do? Well, this article said that you should speak up to the person if the situation isn’t violent, (Kowalski). So if you do see racism happening whether it is in policing or even just someone at your school, speak up. Even though this could put you out of your comfort zone, it is for the good of our country and our world. 

Some people may wonder, why would anyone be racist? There are multiple reasons obviously but this one made the most sense to me. It was, “People who grow up in a family where racist views are expressed, or have friends who make racist jokes, might learn to believe that racism is normal and acceptable.”(“Racism and Racial Bullying”). This made the most sense to me because they grew up around it thinking it's okay when it isn’t. But they don’t know that it’s not okay because no one has ever told them. If you speak up to these people they will understand and hopefully stop being racist to others.

In the end, racism in policing is a big issue because it affects people in negative ways and gets African Americans punished more than they deserve. For us to stop it, we have to donate to the BLM cause or some other charities that will help end it as well.
