A new floating bus stop has been installed in Bath, England by the Bath & North-East Somerset council, and funded by the Department for Transport.

It has received criticism for the potential to put pedestrians at risk who are getting on and off the bus. However, pedestrians have priority over cyclists who are supposed to stop if there is a pedestrian crossing the cycle lane.
Concerns have been raised for the safety of pedestrians, but they are not stepping off directly into the cycle lane: there is the opportunity to stop and cross when the user is certain the crossing is safe to use.

To make the space even safer, the design could place the bus stop on its own island, then have the cycle lane, then have the pavement. This would ensure pedestrians embarking off the bus have a safe place in the bus stop shelter before crossing the cycle lane to walk on the pavement.

MacMichael, S.

Self-described as “simultaneously pragmatic and endlessly ambitious”: muf is an architecture practice who specialise in small-scale interventions of art and architecture. muf was formed in 1994 by three women, and have since been the subject of criticism and dismissal for not designing buildings. As architects: the value of their work lies not in whether they design buildings, it lies in making spaces. “We collided with journalists’ projections of us as three women set apart from architectural mainstream”. Because muf were not doing what was and has always been expected of architects, they were not really accepted by the profession and were subsequentially deemed unconventional.

muf begin their process with site research into both the social infrastructure and ground conditions. The limitations of a brief contribute to the urban strategy within each project; they strive towards a methodology that brings up what would have otherwise remained invisible. Possibilities are uncovered that may have gone unnoticed.

muf believe commissions for the public-realm should express its users and not be dependent on the source of funding. One of their key principles is building a relationship between the community and the architect; they believe interventions have an impact on everything, and that those who have an effect on the space deserve to dictate what it will be. Through their work, they are always trying to understand what the key issues are.

Through their designs, whether they are permanent or temporary, muf make space for more than one thing at a time. Their spaces create opportunities and serve a purpose. muf strive to include the excluded; they are driven by an urgency to make the world a better place.
There is an interdependence on what is lived and what is built.

A Car-Free London? is a competition entry where entrants were asked to imagine zone one in London without cars.

muf examined the car in detail, asking why one needs cars? Cars give the driver comfort, reassurance, a sense of luxury and glamour, a desire for social mobility and social liberation. Cars intend to connect; they embody the transition between the city and the suburbs. Driving allows one to experience the aspects of urban life, especially the celebration when one reaches the entrance to a city.

“The stationary or immobilised car is as common as the fantasy car moving seamlessly through the television advert taking with it your desires for social (and libidinal) mobility”. The car is a destination itself, whether it is moving or not.

Within their entry, muf posed the question “If the car was unfolded, and its desirable attributes laid across the city, would you leave your car at home?”. Desire lines come into view: promoting social mobility and connections between close-by locations. muf printed an image of a car interior on a t-shirt to symbolise the user experience being the driving focus of owning a car.

Stoke City Council held an open competition with the Public Art Commissioning Agency in 1998 with the aim to design a lifting barrier and prevent illegal traffic to the Stoke Town Centre.

muf’s proposal consisted of an art-architecture installation in collaboration with Armitage Shanks ceramics factory. They designed two pieces of street furniture: oversized fragments of a dinner plate that provided an opportunity to sit down (two benches). The first month of the installation saw video projections across the installation, showing portraits of all collaborators on rotation; providing a softer gaze than a CCTV camera.

The commercial space in Stoke Town Centre had been slowly moving into an enclosed shopping centre, and consequentially the social spaces followed. By installing two benches, it drew people outside and into these social spaces once again. “After the end of the 16 years of Tory rule we see social space and its occupation beginning to be recognised as ownership of a kind”.

The servant has to obey the master, but to Hegel this is not enough. As Hegel observed in the French Revolution, if servants do not believe in their masters, eventually they will turn on the powerful. It is a radical proposition: In the long term, power depends on voluntary obedience by those who obey. Moreover, the long-term master wants to be thought legitimate, wants his servants to acknowledge that he has the right to rule them.

Relations between ‘lords’ and their ‘bondsmen’, as Hegel called superiors and subordinates.

Continuing with my initiative to increase the quality of intermodal switches in Bordesley Green, I am proposing another intervention along this cycle route. This second intervention will be the second of many future phases that will intersect and connect at various modes of public transport throughout Bordesley Green.

This designated cycle route will make Bordesley Green a safer place for pedestrians and cyclists: by providing amenities such as public cycle repair stations and public cycle pumps, it will encourage the community to cycle more often. There are currently no cycle hire stations or cycle repair shops present in Bordesley Green, resulting in a lower access to cycling than the majority of Birmingham. To combat this social injustice, a cycle-hire station and cycle repair shop located on-site will be a central part of my design.

Taking inspiration from Designing Disorder by Richard Sennett and Pablo Sendra, planning for disorder is necessary. The book proposes urban design experiments for places where spontaneous activities and social interactions do not occur; changing existing spaces should take priority over creating spaces.

As of the 2011 Census, 61.1% of the population in Bordesley Green was Asian (41.1% Pakistani and 13.0% Bangladeshi).

Despite positive impacts on health and the environment, there may be social, cultural, and behavioural norms that prevent people from using bicycles as a form of transport. Many research studies have been conducted across the world on what is the highest contributing factor in deciding to cycle or not. It may also be affected by how accessible bicycles are, the distance between the start and end of a journey, what other modes of transportation are accessible or accepted, how safe a cycling experience would be, and whether people have learned to ride a bicycle.

This paper concluded that active transports, such as cycling and walking, have a positive impact on health, environment, and quality of life. It may even contribute to a decreased risk of disease.

BANGLADESH
Cycling in rural Bangladesh is one of the most popular modes of transport, especially amongst students in large cities. There are many options for cycle tours around Bangladesh – for tourists it is widely promoted as an opportunity to see the sights.
Bangladeshi Cyclists is an organised group of cyclists who host three cycle rides each week. They also held the Guinness World Record between 2016 and 2019 for ‘Longest single line of bicycles (moving)’ when 1186 cyclists rode in a continuous line in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Some say it is popular amongst the youth, some say it is considered an amateur pursuit. It is considered by some just an option for commuting or exercise.
A lack of cycling promotion in Bangladesh in recent years may have arisen due to shortages in funding and a lack of infrastructure.

PAKISTAN
Cycling in Pakistan, is also promoted to tourists, but there is conservative views on women and young girls cycling.
In north Pakistan, women using a bicycle is a rare sight in Pakistan: female passengers on motorbikes ride with their legs on one side, which increases the danger of falling off. They face a lot of restrictions to their lifestyle: riding a bicycle, swimming, and talking about menstruation with men in their family. These restrictions are taught from a young age.

This view on cycling creates a gender inequality; women and young girls are discouraged from learning to cycle, and therefore cycling to commute, enjoyment, or exercise. It is essential that any gender has equal access to cycling; it is important to develop healthy bodies as a child. Cycling promotes better health and lifestyles, reduces carbon emissions, and reduces time for commuting.
Conservative views on gender norms, and the associated expectations that follow are a barrier to the opportunities provided by cycling. The attitude that women should not cycle poses a challenge to women’s health and freedom.

In December of 2018, a group of women and young girls cycled through the streets of Karachi, Pakistan. Religious conservatives objected to this movement by calling it vulgar and threatening to religion and culture. The camp was organised by a Pakistani cyclist and international adventurer called Samar Khan, aiming to provide women and young girls with bicycles and the training to encourage themselves and others to join in. “We will not let such indecent activities take place in our area which would threaten our religion and culture. This was a Western agenda applied in Landi Kotal,” – Muqtader Shah. Some consider it to be un-Islamic, perhaps they have “outdated ideas about protecting symbols of female virginity”, as proposed by Munaza Shaheed.

This Women’s Cycle Camp began with seven or eight girls, and quickly increased to thirty. It came in response to a lower access to extracurricular for girls: “If [boys] can ride, why shouldn’t we?” (Dawood, Z., 2018). The first time they cycled in public, they faced verbal and physical abuse from a group of male students. The girls were kicked and commanded to cover up and get out of sight: “Why don’t your brothers stop you? Cover yourself and go pray! Go home!”.

Women are seen as the responsibility of men, not themselves. This abuse resulted in the cycle route being directed away from the school to prevent the attack from happening again. Why should women have to change their behaviour in order to feel and be safer? Why is it not the responsibility of men to respect women and not make it an unsafe place for women?

Differences in access to cycling exist between neighbourhoods: the cycle group in Karachi is run by working-class women who have less access to vehicles. A cycle group in Lyari are run by wealthier women but they face tighter constraints and expectations in their behaviour.
It can be empowering to learnt how to cycle, at any age; it enables a unique sense of freedom that everyone should have the opportunity to experience.

In Lyari, women and girls cycling is considered ‘offensive’ by some. Some even believe women belong at home. Pakistan is a conservative country, cycling is considered by some as a ‘vulgar and sexlike act because a woman must straddle a seat’. This view is not shared for men riding a bicycle so a gender inequality is created. Women occupying public space is seen as a threat to public morality.

It is important to recognise that barriers to equality still exist for women today: all British women over the age of 21 were awarded the right to vote in 1928, but that was only white women. (INSERT VOTE STATISTICS HERE).
Women of colour and women in non-European countries still face barriers to freedom and equality. 48.7% of the population in Pakistan is women, of which only 25% are employed.

Nawaz, Suddiyas & Ali, Yousaf. In 2018 more than 25% of all journeys were made by bicycle, in contrast to 5% in the UK.

The roads have been redesigned to accommodate cycling. In the 1970s, roads were congested with cars. In 1971 alone more than 3000 people were killed by vehicles, almost 500 of which were children. There was public backlash in 1973, and combined with cuts to oil production it led to the Dutch government deciding to remove priority from cars.
35’000km of cycle paths exist in the Netherlands.

Sustainable Mobility Week was held in Bogotá, Columbia between January 30th and February 3rd this year. This invites a dialogue on sustainable alternatives to travel and mobility. Currently, the city’s transport infrastructure consists of a Metro, aerial cables, the Regiotram, and a green corridor.

The whole week led up to Car-Free Day on February 2nd to encourage sustainable alternatives to transport such as bicycles and buses. The mayor of Bogotá, Claudia Lopez, has announced goals to improve mobility after decades of demands from the public for better transport infrastructure. Their response is to promote sustainable lifestyles and reduce travel times and congestion throughout the city. Expanding cycle paths and pedestrian walkways will improve mobility for citizens and encourage sustainable alternatives to travel by discouraging use of cars.

By 2025, there will be a green corridor throughout the city centre; the city already has 100% inventory of electric buses.

To make a larger impact in combatting climate change, Birmingham must adapt immediately. The emissions in 2020 alone were equivalent to the emissions of Iceland. The minimum reduction needed to make enough impact is 10% per year. Birmingham’s clean air zone is not enough of a strategy.
Transport contributed 34% of total greenhouse gas emissions in 2020.

Bogotá’s efforts towards a sustainable future has placed it amongst the top 100 most sustainable cities in the world. The study analysed factors of the Sustainable Cities Index (SCI), which assessed green spaces, transportation, low air pollution, ad energy consumption. Bogotá was commended on cycling infrastructure, waste management, and reduced air pollution.

E-Scooters
E-scooters emit six times more CO2 than the metro/subway train, but three times less than a car. Only 13% of scooter journeys are made in alternative to cars, taxis, and buses. Therefore, e-scooters mainly replace means of transport that are less polluting. Despite low usage emissions, the aluminium frame has an extremely high-carbon footprint that is not justifiable: it is not a sustainable enough alternative.

Many e-scooters are also dumped in bodies of water after use. The batteries within the scooters are insulated in a waterproof case, but it does not protect the scooter completely from corrosion out in the environment. Regardless of the rising popularity within recent years, e-scooters do not seem to be as innovative as they could be for reducing transport pollution. With many alternatives that are less polluting, use of e-scooters should not be encouraged as a sustainable option.

A study in Finland claims that people are more likely to be injured by riding an e-scooter than a motorbike, bicycle, car, or pedestrian. It is reported that over half of people admitted to Accident and Emergency were under the influence of alcohol or other substances and were admitted between midnight and 6 AM. E-scooters are highly accessible and become most dangerous to users and nearby pedestrians during a time where behaviour is less regulated. Banning e-scooter rentals after midnight on weekends could aid in reducing the number of injuries caused when people are under the influence.

Why Loiter? Women and Risk on Mumbai Streets is a book written by Shilpe Phadke about women occupying public space in Mumbai, India. Women do not loiter in Indian cities, it is an unfamiliar sight. There is an underlying assumption that oitering women are up to no good, that women are dangerous to society.

“Of course, no one actually says this out loud. But every little girl is brought up to know that she must walk a straight line between home and school, home and office, home and her friend or relative’s home, from one ‘sheltered’ space to another.”
Why is it that these expectations are not spoken about out loud, what could happen if they were uttered aloud? Would an argument ensue? Are women not expected to be quiet too, if loitering is disallowed? Not seen and not heard. If it only indoors that are considered shelters that women should occupy, what is dangerous about outdoors? Is there some perceived threat we are not addressing? If women are not outside, it cannot be women that pose this threat, it must be men. Why is it that the responsibility of women to keep themselves out of harm’s way, and not the responsibility of men to remove the harm?

Women have the right to loiter.
“Even in Urban India, women do not share equal access to public space with men. Women in Mumbai have, at best, conditional access to public space.”
“We argued that what women need in order to access public space is not safety—which is inevitably conditional upon women being respectable—but rather the right to take risks without their presence being questioned.” (Phadke, S. 2020).

“Feminism in India and elsewhere in the world has often been accused of a lack of joy – the terms of description our undergraduate participants in workshops used were inevitably negative – man-hating, anti-beauty, anti-family. While we disagree with these negative stereotypes, it is not untrue that even after decades of struggle, women cannot claim the right to fun.”

The practice of preserving the front of buildings that have elegant architectural designs; the construction of a modern building behind its old or original front.
It can be a strategy to preserve cultural or historical significance whilst balancing changes to a building's structure. It is a type of adaptive re-use; to partially conserve.

It can provide a bridge between old and new. Modern building practices have updated building regulations to adhere to, and security measures to introduce. Retaining the façade whilst updating structures are a good way to partially conserve a space.

The façade of a building is the part that is more interacted with by the public.

Adaptive reuse reduces the wasteful processes through demolition and reconstruction: building waste often goes straight to landfill. New construction uses a large amount of fossil fuels and releases more harmful emissions.
However, using certain parts of an existing structure can increase energy usage and operational carbon. Facadism seems to be a compromise of cost, energy usage, and preservation.

The extension to the museum provides a roof to the previously open-air top floor. New exhibition areas are created on a floor suspended from the roof addition, to avoid adding new structural columns into the main gallery.

The design intends to celebrate the existing gothic military architecture, which was common in 15th century Germany. Damage occurred from a war in the 17th century, but before the art museum extension there had been no alterations to the building since 1904.

The angular metallic forms of the new roof and entrance contrast with the romantic ruins of the castle, and could be seen as a response to Feininger’s paintings which are displayed within.

Through my project Carless Bordesley Green? I aim to increase the quality of links and connections between public transport in Bordesley Green; a cycle infrastructure will connect all bus routes and train stations and encourage use of bicycles as a sustainable alternative to other modes of transport. As of the 2011 Census, cars per household in Bordesley Green was an average 0.82: this figure is higher than other Wards within the vicinity of the city centre such as Ladywood (0.56) and Nechells (0.51).

This cycle route will provide the opportunity for learning how to ride a bicycle, hiring a bicycle, storing bicycles to further a journey using a different mode of transport, storing bicycles to use amenities on-site, and repair services for different types of bicycles.

There are currently no cycle hire opportunities, cycle repair amenities, or cycle infrastructure in Bordesley Green; cycling is not encouraged or supported in this ward. My intervention will address the inequalities of access to cycling those in Bordesley Green face.

The cycle route directs cyclists through the site, which currently stands vacant and disused, aside from pedestrians using it as a transition space and desire path. By dividing the building in two, the east building will be used for cycling lessons and proficiency, and the west building will be used for cycle maintenance and repair.

To utilise adaptive re-use throughout my design, I will inhibit sustainable choices in every scale of the proposal: from reducing embodied carbon by retaining parts of the structure of the existing building, to promoting cycling and public transport as an alternative to carbon-intensive modes of transport like cars. Embodying the art of maintenance is crucial to my sustainability initiative.

Cycling through Cannon Hill Park was a highly pleasant experience, there are wide roads which allow a generous amount of room to be shared with pedestrians and cyclists. I would imagine this space would make a great setting for learning how to ride a bicycle.
The markers and signs to show that this space was National Cycle Route 5 provided assurance that I was in the right place to cycle through, and it alerts pedestrians to anticipate cyclists through the area too.
The day I cycled through this park was a sunny day in April, which certainly improved my experience.

Leaving Cannon Hill Park, the National Cycle Route 5 signs were still present along my journey for a while. Even though there was not a dedicated cycle path on a few roads, seeing other cyclists on the road boosted my confidence in the space I was occupying.

Once I reached Belgrave Middleway, there was no safe space for cyclists and I was very close to a main road. A railing or barrier alternative between the pavement and the road would have made me feel much safer to cycle on this road; because there was not I decided to walk with my bicycle.

Reaching the canal brought such a relief: I was only sharing the space with occasional pedestrians and a stretch of water. Despite the lack of signage for where I was along the canal, I managed to find my way to Small Heath. I had to cross a bridge over a very busy road, which seemed to only have an accessibility ramp on one side: which sees redundant as it means there is not an accessible option for ramp users to reach the canal.

Small Heath Park was pleasant to cycle through; the widths of the pathways were not as generous as those in Cannon Hill Park but it was still a possibility to share the space with pedestrians.

Coventry Road and Muntz Street were highly populated with both pedestrians and vehicles; I did not see any cyclists which made me nervous and I chose to walk on the pavement with my bicycle.

National Cycle Route 5 is a successful cycle infrastructure and made me feel more confident using my bicycle for the first time in Birmingham. It is important to acknowledge that a contributing factor to my confidence in cycling in and around Cannon Hill Park is familiarity: I live near this area and I frequently visit the park.

More frequent visits to the canal near Bordesley Green, and my chosen site on Green Lane would increase familiarity and I could feel more confident navigating the area without relying on google maps.

The implementation of cycling infrastructure with clear signage in Bordesley Green, and an increase in cycling as a mode of transport could have a positive effect on how confident people are to cycle in and around their neighbourhood, and perhaps in the future Birmingham.
