Tactics for Communication

As a budding young apologist, one of the things I think about (and use as an excuse) when considering sharing the gospel is the question, "Is this the right time and place?" I've been blessed to witness Christian friends meet strangers and ask say, "I'm so-and-so, what's your name?" followed by, "You should come to our church!" It's a skill I've always admired, but I'm not always sure it's the most effective tactic. With that as background, what are some strategies you would recommend? Is the straight from the get-go approach something I need to get better at? Should I first establish that I'm not a lunatic? How do I put myself in a position where I can effectively share the gospel?

I like listening to worldview and theology conversations but sometimes I have a hard time participating in them because I feel like I can't word my sentences as well as others. It's not that I don't know what I believe but more that I don't feel comfortable in bigger groups discussing such big topics. What if I say the wrong word or people don't understand me? I'd really like to grow out of this. How can I speak more thoughtfully and eloquently?
