I selected these themes for awaking and fences because in the book Edna or some may know her as Mrs. Pontellier .Edna was not comfortable with the relationship that she was in at the time. Mr. Pontellier was nice to other people but not to her. It's like he had his hand around Edna neck “looking at his as wife as one looks at a valuable piece of personal property” This is only one example of many that she had no equality no freedom of choice. But then she met a man named Robert and everything changed. All because she decided to be with him with terrible consequences 
In fences We start out with two black men talking and they say" Afraid to let the white man see him carry it home" already setting a tone for black brothers and their lack if equality. Through Page 34-36 Troy refuses to talk to the recruiter he is still saying that the white man will not let you play All he is scared for his son and not be discriminated agents like he did when he was younger. This created a wall of fear and made the family's relationship deteriorate to where he pushes away his wife and his son Even though times are changing.
