HC

HC is known as the High Concept Document. This is a full document of the plan of the game. This is a way of keeping a record of ideas they have. I found an example on this website.

It includes information and chapters for example Game Analysis, Game Design, Characters, Sound and a Key Feature Summary for the end.

The Game Analysis is a quick introduction about what the game is about altogether and main reason with the title. The Game Concept is basically explaining about the how many people can play it, the objectives of the game and what the game requires you to do. So for example Game Goals which talks about the goals of the game when playing it. The game information which talks about the important details and what devices you can play the game on for example. Competitor's Analysis are where the characters of the game are explained for example in this one there are the main character Batman and also Superman and other characters. Lastly the Story Overview what talks about the creators of the game and the story of the game.

The Game Design talks about the whole design of the game and how its designed on softwares. The first heading says Expanded Game Concept which talks about the game-play of the game and of the characters.Transformations talks about which characters can transform and how they designed to do this. Front End talks about how the game is set so for example is perhaps they could set it up as a 'Comic Book' and the panels of the game. Camera title talks about the different shots when playing the game. Then there is Game Structure includes Game Modes which has got for example 'Story Mode' and 'Challenge Mode'. Story Mode is basically talking about the modes to the game so Challenge Mode for example.

The Characters talks about who is in the game and what character they have made for the game for people to play with them. Enemy Generators talks about what moves your character can do for example 'Crashing through windows'. They are also drawn diagrams of a Sample Basic Enemy and detail about them. This also includes Vehicles that might be included in the game for the characters to move in and that also includes diagrams of the vehicles included. It includes Boss Enemies which is basically the leader of the Enemies which is a high character like the other main characters. They also use a diagram of the leader and talk about all his strengths and weapons he has himself.

Sound is very important for a game because it makes the game also interesting. The first title of this is talking about the Genre so for example if its a horror game there would be dramatic sound so it goes with the game and also make the gamer react to enjoy the game more. They also use Story which talks about what kind of sound effects there can be when they perhaps make actions or have super powers. Also what the music will be like throughout the whole story of the game. The last topic is Art where it talks about how the music depends on the art of the game.

The last of a HC is a Key Feature Summary. This includes a long list about the main key features of the game for example how the game is 'exciting' and a good 'puzzle' to play. This is just last suggestions of why the game would be good to be made and played.

Then It should be persuaded to your manager so they could decide whether they think its a good idea or isn't. This document includes information on the game, how they would make it, the advantages of the features and diagrams of the characters.

Analysis of Brief/Idea

This is where it controls everything that is outside of actually making the game. Also proves your team can make the game and that game is worth making. This is for instance starting with the story which usually comes from game designers themselves or are pitched by outsiders. They can be focused on also other forms like entertainment like popular movies.

Research

Research is very important because they've got to see for example what categories they could use, what age groups play types of games and what is the most popular games so they can decide what will be best for the game so it can become popular.

Primary- This image is an example of what someone has done to try find out research of what percent of men and women play mobile games.

Secondary- This image is also shown as secondary research because the game designers can look at this image and see the most popular so for example if most woman play mobile games and they want to make a mobile game. They can use this as an advantage because they could focus it on making it a more female friendly game as that would make their game very popular. This is very helpful for game makers because they can look at all different kinds of research to see what popular games are available so they can know what to focus on.

Quantitive- This includes asking questions to get straight up opinions so for example asking about other games to see if people like them or dislike them. This does take longer for the game designer but it gets good information as well.

Qualitative- This would include meetings and focus groups so for example they could get there target audience to a focus group and get quick opinions for the game. It could be like a pitch but your doing it to a certain age and group you want to make for the game.

Milestone's

Milestone is where the company or game maker makes Smart Targets are made for the game. This is for example a gamer wants to make a Milestone 1 and add smart targets to that for the game there making. If they reach there targets they can then make another Milestone and make extra targets to get them done by for example there next Milestone there going to set.

The example I can use for this is the game Titan. This company must of made a lot of Milestone Targets because it took the over seven years of development for a Computer Game. It was supposed to released on September 2012 but it got cancelled. They had to carry of developing the game until they finally released the game on November 2014. This game has to become a video game, so this shows they have been making Smart Targets and managed to improve on there game.

Testing

Alpha

This still happens whilst the development is going on, Alpha is tested with features for the game which are done with the art and sounds included. This first stage of testing is also called 'feature complete' and is also referred to as the Alpha Milestone. At this point its good because it means the game is yet there but still needs more work to be done. This stage is hard because the game isn't done and the design is being carried out. However the game is considered done because they cannot put any budget and schedule to make the game as planned.

The game is considered as a 'feature complete' but that doesn't mean theres no more work to be done. At the time of the gameplay testing and the players evaluating which begins steady. What the design team focus on when the game players are playing is the pacing and the balance issues. This is so they can start thinking about creating more levels or different scenes. Then this involves the game players playing over again repeatedly so they can look for the rough spots to be more smoothed over and improved. The testing is also for the game makers to see any misleading art and surprising bugs. This can also been in-house which is where the game can be played at home then evaluated.

Beta

This is once all of the gameplay, environments and objects of the game are completed. It has already been evaluated by some game players and there have been improvements made so the game is nearly completed. This method is referred as 'going into beta' or like the alpha the 'beta release'. For Beta they manage to get more players to test the game so they find more bugs and get better evaluation form them, then they can find and fix the bugs. After this the game is near its release whilst they are still changing all the aspects of the art, coding and the sound of the game. Betas are either close for private case or there it is limited to a specific set of users but also it can also be open to the public.

Gamma or Delta

This is when the software is finally complete. There are perhaps numerous low priority bugs into the next point release and the service pack as well. This is referred as 'public beta' for anyone who has preordered the game will have access to it. This is not retail relaxed its just to fix all bugs and problems for game will have at launch.

Once the game is actually completed its the Post-Prodcution phase which includes reviewing, final bug correcting, marketing and lastly distribution.

Final Bug Correction

In this stage many of the programmers have to start getting involved with art people. This depends on there role for example for a 3D programmer needs to be in contact with a 3D modeller to give help so they can both work together and maybe improve the last parts and see if the game looks good.

Testing usually takes 3-4 months which during it they are testing for bugs, errors, and sound that can be fixed and improved. Each manufacturer has their own approval guidelines for the game to say when it has finally been improved and all fixed for bugs.

Gold Master

This is finally when all of the aspects of the game are balanced, all the bugs have been fixed, sound and animation are timed perfectly. The game is finally ready to be 'frozen' in a form of a 'gold master' CD-ROM which is ready for shipment. This happens so the game can finally get out for advertisement for example magazines for reviewing and through there packaging as well. Even if the game is ready or not the game still goes to gold master.

Distribution

The game now has to be finally available to others, therefore it needs packaging. A digital distribution is where people can download the game online instead of buying the game at a store. Also the game gets made for various platforms of gaming devices for example a game can be created for the Xbox but also for the Wii.

Also for online gaming it is to do with Steam, Xbox Live Arcade and the iTunes App Store. The way to do this is by selecting a game, viewing the product page and if they decide they like the game they game can download it to there computer or there device. They can start playing the game as soon as its downloaded.
