Perfectionism is a Flaw

Celestine North is the poster girl for the corrupt oligarchy, formally known as the Guild, and all those who are Flawed. She is the beginning of change. She is "North" "a new direction." Even though she is expected to be such things, she has a very black and white view of the world. I believe she is two logical and will struggle in life because she fails to see the bigger picture. This failure to see the bigger picture is the result of perfectionism. She has to be perfect, at all costs. She sets high standards and criticizes herself for not reaching them. This is her true Flaw.

These were the first chapters that truly engrossed me within the story. At first, I didn't find the text exciting or suspenseful because there wasn't much character development. At the beginning, I didn't really care who was taken away or branded flawed because I didn't care about them. Chapters 20-27 focus heavily on character development and create a sense of sympathy for Celestine at the trial (and the branding). I found myself rooting for her and feeling uneasy during the branding session. The character development that Celestine undergoes is self-realization.

The pace of the text effectively kept me engrossed in it, making me want to read the next chapter to find out what would happen next. For example, the trial taking place over many chapters rather than one or two and including some small cliffhangers made me want to read on to see what would happen to Celestine and if she would be loved or hated by the people.

Flawed, Round 2, 21-27

I'm really starting to enjoy this book. The pace of this book is basically moment to moment, a first hand account of what happened to Celestine North and her story of what she should do about the case. Every detail is considered in some of these pages, how she felt, how she thought others felt, how she felt about others feelings, the lipstick on the judges lips matching her glasses. It's these little details that prolong the book and further grow the suspense and depth or the story. At first I found these attributes of the book to be tedious and little too much, but now that I know the characters I'm able to relate, and feel the sense of urgency. It's these attributes of the story that I want to implement in my writings so that's my goal for reading Flawed.

In chapters 21-27, I noticed significant character development for Celestine. She begins to understand the corruption within the Flawed system and chooses to express the truth. She helped the old man because she was compassionate. In chapters 28-31, I still noticed significant character development for Celestine, however we also got a look into the true nature of Bosco. He is the definition of evil and, unfortunately, he is the definition of law. Instead of branding Celestine five times, as was ordered. He added a sixth to her spine. Additionally, the story has become very interesting because we are learning how Celestine has to deal with her new life as a Flawed. The constant attention. The constant fear. And the prospect of going to school. The theme for these chapters is one of self-realization and the rising above hardships.

Theme in Flawed 28-31

I think a theme I got from reading a few chapters into this section is that humanity is both good and evil and that it's only a matter of perspective. For instance, Celestine helped the old man out of compassion and overlooked the idea of being flawed and perfect which showed good in a person who usually would have done the bad thing and not helped him. and Crevan, although him and Celestine have had a lot of good moments together these moments are over shadowed by the branding, a once good person is now turned evil.

Throughout these chapters in Flawed, I have noticed a few themes, one of which is change. For example, before she received her brands, Celestine had many friends, had no trouble picking out her daily outfit, and enjoyed going to school. But in chapter thirty and thirty-one, she describes how she couldn't pick out a dress because she doesn't have any clothes that help her "hide" and explains how she doesn't want to go to school because of all the possible negative attention. At school, Marlena, one of Celestines best friends, told her that she didn't want to be friends because Celestine had betrayed her trust by admitting to being Flawed in the trial. Later that same day, Celestine attempts to talk to Coleen but is met with a venomous yet truthful response about how desperate Celestine is and how she didn't try to talk to her when her mom, Angelina, was taken and branded

Judge Crevan's power is faltering, and opposition to his rule, to his Guild, is growing. This is brought on by Lisa Life, the alter ego of Pia Wang. Lisa Life has been writing positive articles about Celestine and inspiring a movement against the Guild. These chapters are dedicated towards introducing key players in the fight against the Guild. Up to this point, we only knew Pia Wang as a strong supporter and newscaster of the Guild. Now we know her as the rebellious Lisa Life who is shining a light on the courageous actions of Celestine. We also get introduced to Alpha, Celestine's math teacher. She opens up a world of revolution. She informs Celestine of the extent of the opposition to the Guild. To learn more, she invites Celestine to a "support group" meeting, where she will give a speech.
