My first response to this was how could he be abducted then sold into salary being a free man. No one cares that he was a free man. Even when informed they do not care, his first master is only worried about his debt. They even create a fake identity for his so he can effectively be sold. Also it is deplorable for Master Ford's wife to say Eliza will forget about her children after a meal and sleep.

My first reaction to the movie was calm and soothing. Then when Solomon woke up in a cell all chained up I was frustrated and angry. Knowing that he was betrayed and sold as slave when he was drunk. It also reminded me of sex trafficking because he was really gullible when he met Hamilton not knowing their true intention. Solomon's life turned dark real quick.

The movie started out nice and calm, but quickly turned brutal and dark. A free man was taken, beat, told he was someone he knew he was not and forced to conform to the reality they gave him. I was, and am impressed by his ability to hold onto his identity, to know at his heart that he was a free man and his drive to acquire his freedom again.

When the film began my first impression was of interest and of curiosity. What I soon discovered that many of the other people in the class might agree with. Is the situation that Solomon is put in is one that many African American people find them selves in with that time period. By the end of the little bit of the film that we watched has made me rethink the American History and how that treatment of the slaves is not only what the country was built on but it is what we as a country need to accept no matter the situation.

Tra Tran - It was profound the way slave was treated. If one slave had problem or could endanger the family, they immediately sold the slave to someone else. Solomon was constantly being transfer to different masters, but what surprise me was that he stood up for himself and fought back if he was mistreated after doing what he was told.

My reaction to the first part of 12 Years a Slave was sad to see a man separated from his family because of his color. Solomon being a free man was taken and sold as a slave. Its crazy to me that his first "master" knew of Solomon knowing he was a free man but choosing not to hear it. It was hard seeing how they were treated and white people convincing themselves that its not wrong and its actually their right to do it.

I would have to say that in terms of my first reaction overall was a strong sense of foreboding deep in my gut with Platt was first speaking to the two carnies. I knew from the start those two meant no good, and that it was a façade. However my strongest reaction had to have been when Tibian returned with his friends to hang Platt. I truly felt relief in the idea that the Overseer of the grounds seemed to truly care for the safety of the slaves. However, he refers to them as one would refer to property as to not be seen as a sympathizer. Even if it is short lived the moments relief made it worth the watch.

Disgust at how the slaves were treated and one part that sticks out in my mind was when the slave owners wife said the Elijah would soon forget about her children and that everything would be fine.

My first reaction was heartache. To watch how inhumane and cruel people treated other human beings is truly heartbreaking. To think that this behavior was so "normal", kids would be playing near someone hanging in a tree is horrific. I like to think that the white people who treated slaves slaves this way must have become good at suppressing their guilt because I don't understand how they can be so okay internally with treating people that way.

My reaction to the first part of the movie was deep sympathy towards Soloman's change in social position. Having lived in the Northern part of the United States where he was free, respected and had a family. Until he's maliciously tricked into slavery by two individuals that gained some sort of profit for delivering him. I was also shocked at how children were priced by their appearance and physical capabilities and then sold as livestock.
