There is a lot of variety here. And I think you personally have a very graphic and sensuous sensibility.

You have at least 2 principles here. Keep thinking about other qualities that seem to speak of modernism.

And you seem to like organizing your thoughts through imagery.

A good place to search for pictures is ARTStor.org. Do an "advanced search." Check a few categories (like Europe, painting, sculpture) and set date parameters (short ones, like 1870-1900, 1900-1930). Then put just a word or two into the search box. Like "figure" or "landscape" or "still life." See what pops up.

Or you can search for individual artists.

EC

You crack me up, Fiona! Maybe you are "narrow-minded." Maybe you just know what you like. But you came up with an interesting list of principles. I think, in the end, you see the general trend of modernism toward "art for art's sake" where design and formal beauty are paramount. But here's a way to think about it. Your principles produce art that you love--the flip side is that each principle also results in a style/movement/work you DON'T like. It's sort of the law of unintended consequences. Maybe if you simply recognize this paradox--and therefore recognize the merit of some of those movements--that will help you as you navigate modern art. You notice I said "recognize the merit of some of those movements"--never said you had to find the work personally appealing. ;-)

A few years ago I had a student in my Ren-1855 section first who then followed me into modernism. He HATED modernism. He had just loved Baroque art in particular and for most of the semester in modernism I could see him sitting there with his arms crossed, looking utterly suspicious of everything I presented. At the end of the semester, though, he conceded that there were ideas he had found compelling and that although he will always be a figurative painter working in a naturalistic style, he had absorbed a few points he thought useful for his own art.

So you never know.

EC 6 Dec
