When it was getting late, Simon went back to shelter and he was crawling instead of walking due to exhaustion. The boys, not knowing Simon went off on his own, seen something crawling out of the woods that looked like the beast. Frighteningly, the boys attacked the 'best' and killed it not knowing it was Simon the whole time. I think this relates to human nature by the boys using their killing instincts to protect themselves.
