1. Why and how do we study literature? Why do we study TTTC?
We study literature by analyzing the text and having discussions, all in order to broaden our perspectives and knowledge. We study TTTC to understand the impacts of war as well as to understand the techniques authors can use to convey information, such as being an unreliable narrator.

2. How are we affected by literary texts in various ways? How are we impacted by TTTC?
Some of the ways that we are affected by literary texts is that we learn to have a wider depth of thinking and emotions. We are impacted by TTTC because of its harrowing stories, which make us more compassionate and inspire a different way of thinking about war.

3. In what ways is meaning constructed, negotiated, expressed and interpreted in TTTC?
Meaning is constructed, expressed, and interpreted in TTTC through a plethora of literary devices and unreliable narrator.

4. How does the structure of style of TTTC affect its meaning?
The structure of style of TTTC affects its meaning by opening many of the messages communicated to individual interpretation. Each reader may apply a different lens that will carry an altered message.

Reflection
For an assignment that was completed as a sort of reintroduction to literary analysis, I believe that my work was adequate in some senses and advanced in others. At times, there was a lack of focus, but the language, style, and analysis were advanced in my opinion.

In order to convey the overwhelming fear of being drafted for the Vietnam war, O’Brien contemplates his achievements to justify his apprehension toward the war. The hyperbole of a “million things all at once” allows the reader to sympathize with his anxiety and to comprehend his desire to distance himself from the war. Repetition is also employed by O’Brien to communicate his belief that he “was above it,” that he was not fit for war or the ensuing damages, and certainly that he “was no soldier.” Tim O’Brien’s frantic frenzy of reflection on how he had almost grasped greatness emphasizes his complete and utter dread and objection to becoming a part of the war machine in Vietnam.

    Many of Hughes' poems discuss the hope that should be held for the future. However, many also focus on the history of humanity and the continuing fight for equality. 

    How does Hughes' poems connect to other works we've read? Hughes' work connects to TTTC in the sense that both works see people with trauma and struggles for identity. A theme in TTTC was the manipulation of soldiers and how they are used, which is somewhat similar to one of the themes in Hughes's works about how enslaved people were used and even after slavery, blacks and minorities were told to be patient and sit until freedom comes.

    How does Hughes' poetry connect to our world today? Hughes' poetry is extremely relevant to the world today, as a modern civil rights movement culminates across the world.     The poetry of Langston Hughes offered various insights about the African-American community in Harlem, but especially the social divisions. Although some in the community were able to benefit from the "rising skyline" and have upward mobility in society, some still remained in the same social standing as before. However, the general impression is that people in the community do not forget where they came from.
    How does art reflect the community from which it comes?  Art intrinsically reflects the community from which it comes because the creator will inevitably be influenced by their culture and their community. The creator would have to actively conceal and be conscious of this to prevent that influence from showing, which is not a simple task. Morrison's various techniques impact the meaning of the novel by creating a flexible timeline with multiple perspectives. With these focalizers, the reader is able to glean a larger amount of information about each character.

    1. How important is cultural or historical context to the production and reception of a literary text? Consider the story of Margaret Garner, the Fugitive Slave Act, and other historical and cultural phenomena and how that has impacted the creation and reception of Beloved.
    Historical and cultural context is vital to the entire process of literature. These various events were direct inspiration for the plot of Beloved. Depending on the social context and development of society, Beloved could be received as either a masterpiece of literature.

    Chronicle offers insight into Columbian culture as the audience is able to perceive the flaws of this society due to the misplaced importance on outdated values. This is especially emphasized with the ideals of marianismo and machismo, which are the catalyst for the atrocities committed in this novella. The effects of colonialism leave some members of society incredibly wealthy, and placed above others in the hierarchy, which results in preferential treatment. Honor is also utilized as a diffusor of responsibility, as an action is taken in the name of honor, so it is justified.

    How are we affected by Delbo's memoir and her imperative for us to "Try to look. Try to see"? How were you affected by Auschwitz and After?

    Delbo's imperative forces the reader to empathize and understand the situation that she faced in the Auschwitz concentration camp, as well as the brutality of the SS and the Nazis. Personally, Delbo's harrowing tale allowed me to further humanize the victims of the Holocaust and delve into the emotions they experienced.

    How valid is the notion of a "classic" literary text? What makes Persepolis "literary" even though it is a graphic novel?
    The notion of a "classic" literary text is only valid in that it is subjective. That is, what one culture considers a classic text, another culture may not even be aware of it. Persepolis is "literary" in that it employs many of the same techniques authors use and indeed uses graphical techniques in the same way.
