B. Story of an 8 year old boy getting sent to jail

I am an 8 year old boy arrested for standing up in class. I was sentenced 8 years in prison even though the teacher sustained no injuries. First of all I had ADHD and there was a substitute teacher. Next I “assaulted” the teacher as the teacher had no idea and looked for the cops instead. After I got handcuffed and sent to jail. This caused me mental trauma and scarred me. Luckily after that my parents filed a lawsuit and my jail sentence was overturned. They claimed it violated the Americans with Disabilities act. The police seemed gentle yet also seemed completely fine with the situation. It’s an experience that haunted me.

A. What is the school to prison pipeline?

There is a problem in the US known as the school-to-prison pipeline. Small offenses such as being late or being in a bad mood can lead to fines, suspensions, expelling, or arresting. This could happen to anyone but usually happens to the students that are of a different race or disabled. For instance 18% of the US, students are black, yet 39% of students that have been expelled are black. Also, 70% of all students arrested are black or Latino. Disabled students on average are twice as likely to get a suspension as well. School principals look to the law instead of counselors.

C. Why does the school to prison pipeline exist? What effects does it have on the people?

Some schools don’t receive as much funding as others. This leads to them hiring inexperienced teachers, not having counseling, and bad classrooms, and finding it easier to go to cops instead. This results with racist or biased teachers. A student might have a disability and would get sent to the principal’s office because of it. Due to this, that student will usually get suspended very easily. All these punishments end with the student being unmotivated to learn and most likely drop out. The student dropped out meaning they can’t find a job with no education. Consequently they will usually go commit more crimes afterwards. If the student were to continue doing school, it would lead to them getting suspended, or arrested more. They somehow manage to get through the school system yet it usually ends the same. Going to jail or being suspended means that it will be difficult for them to get a job, and near impossible to get a driver’s license. Also because of the poor funding of schools they don’t get that much education anyways. Either route they take it both leads to them getting trauma and most likely going to the justice system.

There has never been a protest on the school to prison pipeline yet there are a bunch of policies and organizations created. RISE to Youth is raising awareness of the topic. Their solution is to defund juvenile prisons, and instead use it to fund schools. The Marshall project is about the justice system, and currently it is trying to solve it by showing the problems with how it works and is also raising awareness. An educator that was elected to the white house had many solutions to solve the school to prison pipeline. The first is to make BIPOC (Black Indigenous People of Color) a topic at school so the students would know what they would do and potentially treat them better. You should also hire more teachers of color as they most likely would not be racist against the black students, and also train all the teachers to not be racist. Replace all the police with social workers and counselors. A school had a counselor per 128 students and was proven to have a way better mood. If that is not possible make sure the officers are trained with compassion. Lastly make sure the students are punished in a way that says what they did was wrong, not so the wrong thing affects them for the rest of their life. The VA assembly passed 2 senate bills that affect it (unfortunately delayed due to Covid): Bill 2 saying that students cannot be charged on disorderly conduct, and bill 729 saying that principles no longer have to refer to law. The No Child Left Behind Act makes it so if a school does bad it’s the school’s fault and not the student’s. A school in LA had gave out 1360 fines in a year. They stopped giving fines for small offenses and it went down by 90%. The challenge with most of these though is that it doesn’t show where the school would get the money.
