I think the purpose is to foreshadow the reason as to why he became an alcoholic.

The mood created in various parts of the book is chaotic. Each chapter includes something tragic, adventurous or dangerous.

A gap I would like the author to fill in is why the father is always on the run.

In One scene of the book Jeanette was learning how to swim with her father. Her father used the technique of letting them learn themselves. She struggled to stay above and would struggle everytime she was pushed in. One of my memories is when my grandparents were teaching us how to swim and they threw my brother into the pool and he was about 2 at the time. He was kicking and flailing his arms around struggling to keep up to the surface. My mom had to jump in to pick him up.
