The sea and archeology, the uncontaminated nature of Bosco Pantano, the scent of renowned strawberries and other products of the land, but also engaging events, can only motivate a trip to the multifaceted territory of Policoro and Magna Grecia, for a holiday with different facets, in the name of the continuous rediscovery of the past.
A past that buzzes in the National Archaeological Museum of Siritide, right next to the Park, near which there are also the Sanctuary of Demeter and the Temple of Dionysus, from the 7th century BC. C.. Like Metaponto, the city of Policoro also stands out as an important seaside resort in the region and on the Ionian coast, thanks also to a large number of quality accommodation and seaside facilities, an ideal place for a holiday between sea and culture not to be forgotten !

Its origins would seem to date back to the 3rd century BC. when some Lucani, allied with Pyrrhus, retreated to the hill overlooking the Agri valley. The Montalbanese hill, however, was already inhabited starting from the 4th century BC. both for geographical and strategic reasons and for reasons of an economic nature as demonstrated by the numerous archaeological finds referable precisely to this era; very important was the discovery in 1732, in the Montalbano area, of the famous Tavole di Heraclea (from the Greek city of the same name), two bronze tablets with inscriptions drawn up in the mid-4th century, now kept in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples.
After the defeat of Pirro, the fortress was occupied by the Romans, but it remains to establish a continuity of attendance until the early Middle Ages; however, a Byzantine occupation is certain.

Various hypotheses have been formulated on the origin of the toponym:
-according to the Montalbanese historian Placido Troyli it would derive from the light color of the clays of the gullies, typical of the hill on which the town stands;
- Racioppi, in 1889, formulated a second theory, according to which the Lucanians who settled in the III BC. they founded the castle on the hill owned by a certain Albius and therefore called Mons Albianus;
- the last hypothesis is inspired by an Arab matrix; the Saracens founded settlements in the Lucanian territory (Abriola, Pietra Pertosa, Castelsaraceno, Tricarico and nearby Tursi) and this presence could also have been felt in Montalbano, leaving a testimony in the name: Al Bana, in Arabic, means "excellent place" . Jonico was added to Montalbano in 1863 to distinguish it from other homonymous municipalities on the peninsula.
