"The last time I saw her was red. The sky was like soup, boiling and stirring. In some places it was burned. There were black crumbs and pepper, streaked across the redness" (Zusak 157).

By focusing on colors of the sky at the times of human deaths, the narrator, Death, suggests that there is a connection between a person's death and the natural world. This shows why Zusak uses Death as the narrator because Death as the narrator gives the novel a more worldly view and better understanding of how death can be seen in the real world.

Zusak chooses to use Death as the narrator because throughout the novel Death has real feelings, which makes him seem very human. Throughout The Book Thief, Death experiences sadness, joy, depression, guilt, and grief. Sometimes these emotions are seen by colors, which is why color is tied so closely to the narrator, Death.

"It kills me sometimes, how people die" (Zusak 402).
This image shows why Zusak used Death as the narrator because Death can have a heart too. In The Book Thief, Death is there for Liesel and understands her story. This shows that Death does not always have to be a bad thing; sometimes death is there for a reason.

It is not entirely understood, not even by humans themselves, but the will to keep going, learning, growing stays strong. The complexity of humanity amazes and confuses Death. Death respects and is appalled by what Death has seen humans do, which is why humanity haunts Death" (Kylie).
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/938508-last-sentence-of-the-book

This image depicts Death and how Death is the narrator of The Book Thief. Markus Zusak made Death the narrator of the novel because of the powerful impact the narration has on the world. Death as the narrator gives the novel a different world view and perspective of how death is viewed and seen through the book and the world.
