Edmund Rice was from a Catholic farming family; born on the 1st of June in Westcourt, Callan, County Kilkenny Ireland, he received a secret education. He had to learn at a hedge school because it was illegal for Catholics to experience a real education. He later went to a Commercial Academy 2 year later and then, in 1779, he was apprenticed to his uncle in his business, which consisted of supplying ships with their needs. He was able to support himself in his late twenties and went on to marry Mary Elliot in 1786. Unfortunately, Mary died three years later from a tragic horse and Carriage accident. Also, he had a daughter, also named Mary, who had a disability who he had to raise with the help of his step-sister. This was the turning point for Edmund as it made him realise that even though his life had recently been filled with horrible events, other had it much worse for a longer duration of their life. Even though he was a loyal Catholic who went to Church and prayed regularly, he went even further by selling his business and then went on to help others. Rice particularly noticed how unjust it was for children who couldn't afford a proper education. He then set out to change this and set up a school initially in a barn for boys and then began to teach them the Catholic education system. Eventually, after many years of hard work with his Congregation of Christian brothers, he died on the 29th of August 1844 at Mount Sion.

Post 3 - Prayers that Edmund Rice used.

A Prayer for all Christians Working in Education

Lord of all things We thank You for the women and men You have called to work in education. Bless their hearts with Your love, joy and peace. Season their words with Your patience, kindness and goodness. Fill their minds with Your faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. When they respond to a broken-hearted child Show them how to be big-hearted. When they reach out to a rebellious teen Remind them to be obedient to You. When they advise a lonely mature student Help them to be Christ Jesus to them. When they meet with an angry parent Let them see a child of God. When they give advice to a discouraged colleague Give them helpful and encouraging words. When they speak to visitors and strangers Grant them the gift of hospitality. Amen

This prayer talks and prays about education and the teachers who help students learn so that they can have a fuller future. The message of this prayer is that God is nurturing and kind and that he passes this on to teachers who are kind and advise students. Edmund Rice would’ve used this prayer for himself as it could’ve inspired him to take up teaching and be one of the teachers that this prayer talks about. Furthermore, Edmund Rice might have used this in his teaching classroom as he said a prayer to start the day and it would’ve educated his students about teachers. This would’ve been able to inspire them to help others just as he did. In addition to this, Edmund Rice could’ve shown it to his Congregation brothers as it too, would’ve inspired them to help the poor, particularly in education.

Prayer for the poor and needy
Lord God,
You came to give honour to the least, those forgotten, overlooked and misjudged. You came to give first place to the last, those left behind, misunderstood and undervalued. You came to give a warm welcome to the lost, those who are orphaned, abandoned and destitute. Help us to be your ears to listen to their cries. Help us to be your voice speaking out love and acceptance. Help us to be your feet walking beside those in need. Help us to be your hands to clothe, feed and shelter them. You came for the least, the lost and last of this world. Lord, hear our prayer. Amen.

Edmund Rice would’ve used this prayer during his life, particularly after the year of 1802, as this is when Edmund Rice just started up his first night school. This would have suited him more as he would be able to use this prayer in his daily life while also teaching the prayer to the boys that he originally taught. Furthermore, Edmund was a strong believer in education and poverty as he believed it was unjust, hence why he started a school. This prayer may have even helped Edmund get past his wife’s death as it talks about how horrible some people’s lives can be. This might have made him realise that even though he is in a rough spot, he should get over it as other people are dealing with worse things and this also could’ve convinced him to go and help those people who were experiencing problems.

Edmund Rice would've used this Parable and listen to this Parable as it shows how he needed to continue his life even though the circumstances were not the best. In the Parable, it shows this as the beggar had a horrible life on Earth but when he came to heaven God rewarded his hardships and gave him an easier life in heaven. Edmund Rice used this in his life as he daughter was born with a disability and his wife died that same year but, he carried on, helping Catholic kids with their education and future. He then founded the Congregation of Christian Brothers and the Presentation Brothers which shows that even though life may seem tough, life will eventually get better. Furthermore, the words “20 At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores 21 and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores,” are a directed example of this. It shows how tough life was even back before Christ was born as if depicts a poor man. Luke shows this by using the name beggar, covered with sores and longing to eat and the dogs came and licked his sores. All of these small phrases help to shape the parable that Jesus spoke and would’ve helped Edmund on his journey to making his smaller world, a better place. Though there is no proof if Edmund even saw this parable but based on his lifestyle and the parable style and setting, it is safe enough to say, Rice would’ve used it to help his life which would help others.

"Were we to know the merit and value of only going from one street to another to serve a neighbour for the love of God, we should prize it more than silver and gold."

The message behind these words spoken by Rice, is about how even the little things we do in the name of God is worthwhile. He speaks about silver and gold as it was treasured highly in his days and when he compares doing something for the love of God to gold and saying it is higher, more people can truly understand what he means, even if they are from a different background. Furthermore, we know from the Bible to care for all of our neighbours, even if they aren’t and by using the term of neighbour, he really means we should do a service for everyone for the love of God. This is meant for those who value objects with a lot of value rather than actions or emotion. Overall, having these two different ideas joined together speaks about how we know how highly our actions for our neighbour is valued, but we should actually value their help more than expensive materialistic objects such as gold and silver.

"O God, did we even now rightly begin to serve you, your loving heart would take us all to its final embrace."

What Edmund means when he spoke this quote, is that when we only start to believe in God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit, otherwise known as the Holy Trinity, late in life, God would still take us in. God would do this as it is in his nature do accept us, no matter our past if we confess our sins. This shows that God is loving and compassionate even when it may be too late to turn back as we are his children, even though some of us do not believe in him. Edmund’s message is meant for those who didn’t believe in Edmund’s teachings about God and how he would still love them even if they don’t believe in him. Furthermore, it extends people’s general knowledge of God and could convince them to change and believe in him.

The message of the Rerum Novarum is for the Bishops of the Catholic Church and talks about the difficulties of their day. Private Property, the right of the Church to speak on social issues, the role of the state, the worker’s right to a just wage, and the importance of worker associations are the five issues that he talks about. He talks about the Industrial Revolution has evolved humankind and allow them to question the social status of which they live in, particularly problems involving work and money. He informs the bishops of these wretched conditions and explains how horrible the poorer people are living. Pope Leo XIII, talks about poverty and the unjust system of how money works, particularly in the poorer areas of the world. This is relevant to Edmund Rice as he sought to provide everyone with an education which children could not have because they were too poor, which is what the pope was addressing. He even created an organisation to help the poor and they were called the Congregation of Christian Brothers, which the Pope approved. Though this message was after Edmund’s time, he was doing the work that Leo wanted the Bishops of the Catholic religion to do.

Edmund Rice was always following in the priestly, prophetic and kingly work of Jesus and did many different actions to show this.

Priestly – There is a little amount of information on how Edmund Rice would pray, but during his classes, he showed his priestly work of Jesus. Rice would start every day by praying to the Lord our God. He even taught his students these prayers and they would pray together at the start of the school day and also finish the day with the prayer. I this next quote, it shows the day of the Congregation of Christian Brothers of which Edmund Rice lead and his prayer habits. “[The Brothers] begin and terminate the day's business with prayer; they frequently recall the attention of the children to the presence of God [hourly chiming clock]; they give catechetical instruction to the children in the Christian doctrine; they usually inculcate moral and religious truths in the reading class, if the lesson admits of it ... from this it is evident that religion is the leading principle nay, the very spirit which guides and directs their whole educational system.”

Prophetic – Also, Edmund Rice would practice Jesus’ prophetic work by speaking out to crowds, talking about the education and poor system, how it was unjust that it needed to change. He had his own quotes about God, love and the value of how we serve in the name of God but he also used the Bible to try and get his message across. He eventually went to go overseas to Britain to talk to the Pope about his schools which went global, sadly after he passed away. The people who continue his work from where he left off were the Congregation of Christian brothers as he created and lead them, the students that he taught at his school as he spoke about God daily and in their teaching lessons. This message also went out to people who were disconnected from the world such as the poor or those without an education as he went and tried to uplift their lives by first talking to them. In these ways, Edmund Rice has participated in the prophetic work of Jesus.

Kingly – During his lifetime, Edmund Rice did a lot of work to help those in trouble, around him and eventually all around the world. He first started up a night school in a barn with a few other teachers for Catholic boys as they did not receive a proper education. His goal was to recognise the dignity of everyone who lived in the oppressing times in Ireland and wanted to bring out their faith in God, thus making them believe in him again. After a few years teaching at a barn, he went on to teach at a more stable school called Mt Sion in 1802, officially opening in 1804. Even though he was not a proper teacher, he taught himself how to teach the students and by 1810, he could teach 150 boys in one class. In these ways of teaching, the kingly work of Jesus has been participated in by Edmund Rice.

Priestly – The Smith Family is an organisation that helps disadvantaged children all around Australia and set goals to help provide a future for young Australians. They believe in a better future and have had the same goal for almost one hundred years since the organisation began in 1922. Furthermore, the organisation has evolved over time with more donations and more help being handed out. They have multiple who don’t necessarily pray, but they do come together to hope and create a better future. By the team of the Smith Family coming together and in fact just believing and only thinking about their goals, they work in the priestly work of Jesus. By them not directly praying, it shows how much the world has evolved and how they can perform priestly work without praying.

Prophetic – So far, the Smith Family have changed the idea of ‘prophetic’ works of Jesus, as they do not only speak up about problems, but this enables others to be inspired and act. This all started in 1922 when the Smith Family was starting out and the ‘Joy givers’ were born. They went and set out on a journey to bring joy to children’s lives which they still do today, but they also change them forever. Over time the look of them speaking out has changed as now, there are functions in which people can come and learn about their work. In addition to all of this, the Smith Family also have a running website where even more people and look at what they are doing and what problems they are facing. These people can also be inspired by the words of the Smith Family and donate to them, pursuing their life in the kingly way of Jesus. In these new and more revolutionised actions or the ‘prophetic’ work of Jesus, the Smith Family are continuing to following the footsteps of God.

Kingly – The Kingly works of Jesus were performed by the Smith Family organisation in many different ways as they reached out changed children’s lives by physically fixing the problem. By receiving donations from people in Australia, the Smith Family can help Children who have poor education by giving them an education through different courses and education programs. One of these many programs includes the ‘Learning through Life’ education program. This program supports young or disadvantaged children throughout the schooling life which includes Pre-school, Primary, Senior and even their Tertiary studies. The organisation of this program helps the children in three different ways. They have workers specifically for the ‘Learning through Life’ program. These workers connect the children to opportunities based around learning in their community and help to encourage the kids to participate as much as possible in their education. Another way the Smith Family help children through this program is that they give the students availability to the literacy programs and mentoring support. This would help the kids to write and speak better while also getting help through they schooling life. Finally, the Smith Family also helps the whole family with financial assistance so that they can afford to let their child buy the necessities needed for school. This means that the family would be able to spend it on more important things such as food and clothing without having to sacrifice the child’s school requirements. This is a long-term support which helps the Australian child to develop life skills and reach their full potential in school. In this simple way, even though there are many others, the Smith Family participates in the Kingly work of Jesus.
