After being led away from their home by their parents, Hansel and Gretel wanted to find their way back home, but instead they stumbled upon a house in the woods made of food! So, the old witch who lived inside invited them in, trapped Hansel in a cage and made Gretel work for her to make Hansel fat enough for the old witch to cook him and eat him. Then, on the day that the old witch wanted to eat Hansel, Gretel tricks the old witch into crawling into the oven, shuts the door and gets rid of her. Hansel and Gretel collect all of the old witch's precious jewels and bring them back home to their father. Finally, Hansel and Gretel both learned not to trust strangers, even if they treat you well.

Hansel is a little boy who is clever and responsible. He shows throughout the story that he is clever by creating a rock trail to find his way back home, and by sticking out a bone instead of his finger for the old witch to feel so that she would think that he wasn't fattening up. It is shown that Hansel is responsible when he is always looking out for and comforting his little sister. Even though he is a little boy himself, he takes responsibility as an older sibling and he makes sure to take good care of Gretel.

Gretel is a little girl who is brave and observant. She shows throughout the story that she is brave when she survives alone with the witch while the witch makes her fatten up her brother in preparation to eat him. She is very brave because even though she is so little, she endures a lot throughout the story and she knows that she has to be strong to make it through and save her older brother. Gretel shows that she is observant when she outwits the old witch. She had been observing her older brother be very clever throughout their journey, and she knew that she had to do something like her brother in order to save him.
