On Saturday March 9 I took my mom and sister to Barrio Logan to see Chicano Park and the Barrio Logan art Crawl. There is a collection of over 100 murals in Barrio Logan that shows a wide variety of political, social, and cultural statements that are mostly about Chicano/Mexicano people. Most of the murals are in a park called Chicano Park. It is at the intersection of Highway 5 and the Coronado Bridge that was constructed in 1969. I was in elementary school and lived close enough to be aware of some of the tension and protesting that was being done by the residents and community that was displaced by the construction of the bridge and the construction of city or government buildings in the general vicinity. An area was set aside to be open space and free from development. This area was under the new Coronado Bridge. The first murals that I remember were on the sides of the highway onramps. My first official tour of the park was a school field trip in 1972. Since that time I have visited the park a few times and many of the paintings were slightly gratified on or just fading. Although restoration efforts were happening in the 80’s and 90’s there was a significant improvement in 2012. In 2012 BL MAD was formed. Barrio Logan Maintenance Assessment District (BL MAD). This beautification project has now been operational for 7 years. Washed sidewalks, the removal of litter and graffiti, and the additional restoration of the murals all contribute to making Barrio Logan neighborhoods look attractive. Now when you go to Chicano park you will see many of the murals fully restored. You will also see artistes from the Barrio Logan community actively working on further restoration efforts and new murals being made. Chicano Park is featured in the “Barrio Art Crawl”. The "Barrio Art Crawl" is a free self guided tour consisting of murals, open studios, galleries, and local businesses throughout the Barrio Logan Cultural District. The Barrio Art Crawl is the second Saturday of every month. The next Art Crawl will be Saturday May 11. I went to the Art Crawl with my mom and sister on March 9. I highly recommend visiting Chicano Park during the Art Crawl. There will be a combination or art, people, dance, music, food, and cars that will illustrate the Chicano history and culture both of the past and present. There will also be plenty of lowrider cars, lowrider baby strollers and lowrider bicycles to amuse you. After taking your time browsing the murals in Chicano park you can make your way to many of the indoor Chicano art galleries. After attending the event you will have a much better understanding of the Chicano culture and see first hand how community pride and art has transformed some of the Barrio Logan neighborhoods. During the Art Crawl some of the restaurants are too crowded so you might have to return another day for some of the fantastic food. Make sure to try out Salud at 2196 Logan Ave. Other useful information to help plan your trip to Chicano Park can be found using google. Keywords Chicano Part, Barrio Logan Art Crawl, Barrio Logan Art District. Before visiting Chicano park read about the murals on the site http://www.chicanoparksandiego.com Besides the full story of the mural you will find the original painting date and the resoration date.
