In The Metamorphosis, Gregor's change into a bug shows how being different or overburdened can lead to loneliness. When Gregor says, “I’m in such need of encouragement,” it shows his deep sadness and desire for support. This reminds me of the COVID-19 pandemic, when many people worked hard to help their families but felt isolated because they couldn’t see their friends or loved ones. Just like Gregor, they longed for connection and understanding during tough times.

Gregor’s experience mirrors my friend’s feelings of being trapped, especially when he says, “O God... what a demanding job I’ve chosen! Day in, day out on the road... temporary and constantly changing human relationships which never come from the heart.” This reflects the lack of fulfillment my friends often described in their own work and relationships, making Gregor’s struggles feel deeply relatable.

In the beginning of the 4th paragraph, Gregor Samsa says "O God what a demanding job I've chosen! Day in, day out on the road. The stresses of trade are much greater than the work going on at head office, and, in addition to that, I have to deal with the problems of traveling, the worries about train connections, irregular bad food, temporary and constantly changing human relationships which never come from the heart. To hell with it all!" This reflects the reality of real life where most people hate their jobs, dealing with problems, bad food, on and off relationships with your colleagues, family members, etc.

Gregor's transformation in The Metamorphosis is like Peter Parker becoming Spider-Man, they both wake up completely changed. Gregor, however, finds himself trapped: “When Gregor Samsa woke up one morning from unsettling dreams, he found himself changed in his bed into a monstrous vermin,” and unlike Peter, his change isolates him from his family and life.

Gregor’s frustration with his routine reminds me of how high school can feel at times. Like him, I have days where the constant cycle of getting up early, going to school, doing homework, and managing activities feels exhausting. His thoughts about how others seem to have it easier remind me of how I sometimes compare myself to classmates who seem to handle everything effortlessly. Even though I know I have to push through, just like Gregor feels he has to get out of bed, it’s not always easy to stay motivated.

His transformation serves as a metaphor for feelings of inadequacy, rejection, and dehumanization that often stem from failing to meet societal or familial expectations. In Frankenstein, the creature is assembled from human body parts but is grotesque in appearance. Despite his desire for connection and belonging, he is judged solely by his physical form and becomes an outcast.

In both Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka and the animated film Spies in Disguise, transformation plays a key role in the protagonists’ journeys, through the story. In Metamorphosis, Gregor Samsa wakes up to find himself transformed into a giant insect, which isolates him from society and his family, symbolizing alienation and dehumanisation. On the other hand, Spies in Disguise presents a humorous take on transformation when Lance Sterling, a secret spy, accidentally turns into a pigeon.

The theme of isolation in The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka closely relates to the book Invisible by Eloy Moreno, because both of the main characters suffer from major emotional separation. Both works deeply highlight the psychological cost of isolation and the desire for recognition and understanding within despair. Gregor Samsa's transformation into an insect symbolizes his estrangement from his family and society, which ultimately leads to his rejection. Similarly, the narrator of Invisible feels ignored and disregarded by the world around him, reflecting a similar struggle for connection.

I can very much relate to this text as I do not like to be interrupted in my sleep. If I had to wake up early the next day, I would set an alarm for myself. I especially hate it when people wake me up. It doesn't allow me get sufficient sleep and I wake up on a bad start to my day.

The story's themes focus on tradition vs change, isolation and resistance to progress. For example, in the American South after the Civil War, many communities clung to old traditions despite the push for modernization and civil rights. Even today, some small towns struggle with balancing historical preservation and modern development, just as Jefferson tries to reconcile Emily’s old-world values with new societal norms.

A Rose for Emily can be connected to the movie Psycho. Like Emily Grierson, Norman Bates in Psycho is deeply affected by his past and struggles with reality. Just as Emily keeps Homer Barron’s corpse in her home, Norman keeps his mother’s mummified body, showing a similar fear of abandonment and change. Both characters live in decaying, old houses that symbolize their mental and emotional decline.

In Part 1, the town views Miss Emily as a relic of the past, someone who has been left behind by the changing times. This resonates with the experience of watching friends move abroad for school while being left behind in your own country. It can feel like the world is moving forward without you, leading to feelings of isolation and being out of place. I can relate this to my own experience when some of my close friends moved abroad for their studies. While they moved abroad, I remained in the same environment, feeling a bit like Miss Emily—left behind and disconnected from the changes happening around me.
