The Office of Indian Education (OIE) at the Arizona Department of Education (ADE) is dedicated to supporting the educational needs of American Indian students. It aims to ensure these students meet challenging state academic standards while preserving their cultural heritage. The office also focuses on enhancing the knowledge of Native communities, languages, tribal histories, traditions, and cultures among students. Additionally, it ensures that educators serving Indian students can provide culturally appropriate and effective instruction. Overall, the OIE plays a crucial role in promoting the educational success and cultural preservation of American Indian students.

Hello, my name is Stephanie Jackson

Stephanie is a Diné woman. Stephanie is Todích'íí'nii (Bitterwater clan) and born for Kinlichii’nii (Redhouse clan). The Colorado and San Juan river border the land she calls home. Stephanie began her career as an outdoor educator providing experiential learning opportunities for youth in the Southwest region. Stephanie states, “My OST experience led me to being an educator. I have been a river guide and expedition leader for a local non-profit organization. Majority of trips have been led on the San Juan River, but include Canyon de Chelly, the Grand Canyon, some Utah Rivers, Alaska, & the Amazon Rainforest in Peru. My passion for teaching led to 7 years teaching 7th & 8th grade science at a charter school here in Flagstaff. I led several watershed camps, STEM Girl Camps, Art Journal, and the gardening club.” Stephanie earned her Masters in Climate Science and Solutions at Northern Arizona University. She created a science curriculum and taught middle school science for seven years at a charter school. She has joined the Center for Science Teaching and Learning to provide professional learning in STEM education, particularly with the PLANETS project. Being an indigenous woman, on behalf of NAU and a steward of NASA, Stephanie is excited to help the PLANETS team optimize material for indigenous learners to connect culturally with planetary science, and see themselves as scientists or engineers. Stephanie hopes that one day the intentionality of PLANETS today creates profound influence on indigenous youth.

Lauren is a science educator with experience in secondary and higher education focused on professional learning. She recently earned her doctorate in educational leadership and her dissertation focused on undergraduate women’s experiences in STEM related to their sense of belonging. Her work spans multiple STEM education initiatives, including two NASA grants: PLANETS (planets-stem.org), an out of school time planetary science curriculum working to broaden participation in STEM, and PLACES (nasaplaces.org), helping educators incorporate place-based, data-rich instruction. She is also a co-principal investigator on CAMINOS (nau.edu/caminos), a project that increases undergraduate preparedness for scholarly STEM experiences, science communication engagement, and faculty and staff mentorship capacity. Through these roles, Lauren supports inclusive, engaging STEM learning that fosters curiosity and connection in STEM education.

Karletta Chief

Dr. Karletta Chief (Diné) is a UArizona Distinguished Outreach Faculty 2021 and Professor and Extension Specialist in Environmental Science at the University of Arizona and the Director of the Indigenous Resilience Center. Dr. Chief works to bring relevant water science to Native American communities in a culturally sensitive manner. As Director of the Indigenous Resilience Center, she aims to facilitate efforts of UArizona climate/environment researchers, faculty, staff, and students working with Native Nations to build resilience to climate impacts and environmental challenges. Two of her primary tribal projects are The Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe Climate Adaptation and Traditional Knowledge Project and Gold King Mine Spill Diné Exposure Project. Dr. Chief also leads the NSF Indigenous Food, Energy, and Water Security and Sovereignty Program and is training 38 graduate students. Indige-FEWSS’s vision is to develop a diverse workforce with intercultural awareness and expertise in sustainable food, energy, and water systems (FEWS), specifically through off grid technologies to address the lack of safe water, energy, and food security in Indigenous communities. Dr. Chief received a B.S. and M.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Stanford University in 1998 and 2000 and a Ph.D. in Hydrology and Water Resources from UArizona in 2007.
