This movement was started in 1841 in Massachusetts. This was a very small movement of about 20 people that were devoted to transcendentalism. This was a much less radical movement than many of the others. Brook Farm only existed for about 5 years, so did not have a very large contribution to the United States culture. However, it did inspire the writing of a book by Nathaniel Hawthorne. The early 19th century increased the gap between man and women as the market revolution gave men and women distinctly different economic roles. Women did not enjoy feeling like the "submerged sex", they believed that they played as large of a roll in society as men did, and they believed that their contributions should be recognized by an increase in rights. There were massive amounts of immigrants entering the United States, brining with them their own beliefs and cultures. Also, with this introduction of new cultures came intermixing of different cultures in the United States. The transportation revolution allowed people of all sections of the United States to move around and spread their culture. This led to a homogenization of cultures in the United States. The second point of view is that of a "reform-minded" writer. The writer of this one is saying that these conventions are necessary because women deserve more rights than they have. Also both of these time periods developed new religious sects, they led to religious diversity. Although these time periods were very similar, there were many differences. The Second Great Awakening caused an increase in political participation for common people, whereas the First Great Awakening did not.
