From March to July of 1918, the Germans made an attack by launching four devastating offensives. This brought the German Army back to the Marne River. This was the second time Germany was close to winning, but the turning point was when there were American divisions. The divisions were along the Marne and in Champagne which played a defensive role. The Americans then went on the offensive role under the command of Hunter Liggett. The experience from the fighting would prove invaluable as they began independent operations in September.

The battle of Saint Mihiel was a great World War I which was now a part of the newly formed American First Army under General John J. It was the first major operation that was planned by Americans and executed by Americans as an independent force. This was called "Americas first truly great modern battle" because their combined arms attack successfully eliminated Saint Mihiel salient. Because of the great success, this battle was marked by American significant success, the largest air offensive of the war. Americas capability if being a major military power was shown.
