Puritans

The Puritans were very conservative people who did not like to have changes or many variations in their lives. For example, as in the image, the puritans dressed in black and white did not wear color as well as ate the same meals, and were very religious. The Puritans went to church often and praised god and were very simple people and also did not favor the Church of England as they believed it was ungodly and they had a different mindset. However, the church of England did not accept it causing them to flee, and thus, in 1620, the Puritans traveled to the new world to the Massachusetts Bay colony. Therefore, as the church of England was no longer capable of stopping the Puritans, they began expanding their ideology.

The Puritans favored Calvinism and there were several aspects of Calvinism including total depravity, predestination, limited atonement, and grace. Total depravity was the thought that all humans are sinners from the day they are born and are damned for eternity and predestination was the thought that people were chosen by god whether to go to hell or to heaven. Many times, people acted with good nature and deeds to try to be chosen to go to heaven for their own self-assurance and limited atonement is the thought that god only died for the chosen individuals. Grace was a way that allowed individuals to feel clean and reborn in a way. When someone was reborn, they then had the power to do the will of god and to live with guidance from god.

The Puritans were a theocracy which was the connection between church and state and thus, the puritans strived to emphasize their motives through government. For example, the City upon a Hill Theory was where god has seen a strong work ethic and the answer to many things, and god was found in many scriptures. Furthermore, the puritans had a strong belief in education for the reading of the bible. Their belief was so strong that they created iconic schools and many of which included Harvard college which was the first public school founded in 1635. Therefore, the Puritans believed in having control over the government and wanted their ideology to be spread throughout the whole state and used work ethics and education to emphasize their beliefs.

Witchcraft was evident in Salem and the belief that Satan had sent his witches and wizards to cause harm. For example, the Puritans believed that many natural disasters, diseases, and bad fortune were the effects of witchcraft. The Puritans believed that people were witches by having certain symptoms that they thought were unusual and many times, this caused the death of innocent people. Puritans thought that Satan was acting within the world and used methods such as throwing people in the lake tied up and if they floated, they were a witch and if they did not, they were innocent and died. Witchcraft was also caused by foreign influence and old feuds over land in which one would convict the other of witchcraft and once they were arrested, the other would take the other's land.

Witchcraft Trials

The Salem Witch trials were where several girls accused another woman of witchcraft as they said she was torturing and tormenting them. As you see on the bottom left, the two girls have fallen over, and the woman laying on one knee is pleading that she is not a witch. The girl's actions were very convincing as the people already believed in witchcraft and she was thus, arrested and killed for witchcraft. The man being held back seems to be her husband or a form of a family who seems to try to object however it was no use. The girls had acted in pain begging the woman to stop tormenting them and this caused the evidence to become stronger for the accused woman. The men also forced the woman to strip nude in order to inspect her body and see if there were any marks or symptoms of witchcraft and overall, 19 men and women were hanged.
