Is interdisciplinary learning more effective than traditional subject-based learning?

Reflection Prompts:
What were the key insights you gained about population growth, urbanization, and culture?
How did Mathematics help you analyze and present your findings?
What challenges did you face while working on this project, and how did you overcome them?
How has this project changed your perspective on sustainable urbanization?

I learned that as the population increases, cities grow bigger and more crowded. Different cultures influence how cities develop and what people need to live comfortably. Mathematics helped me a lot in analyzing my data. I used charts and graphs to show how populations change over time and how urban areas expand. It made my findings easier to understand. Some challenges I faced were finding accurate data and understanding complex ideas about urbanization. I overcame these by asking my teacher for help and carefully checking my sources. This project changed my view on sustainable urbanization. I realize that cities need to grow in a way that protects the environment and helps people live healthy lives. I think we need smart planning and respect for culture to make cities better for everyone in the future.

Through this project, I gained a deeper understanding of how rapid population growth and urbanization create complex challenges for cities, especially in areas with limited infrastructure. I realized that sustainable urban planning must integrate not just environmental and economic factors, but also cultural heritage to create inclusive and resilient communities. Mathematics played a role by helping me analyze trends, calculate growth rates, and visualize the impact of solutions through data and graphs. One challenge I faced was connecting abstract cultural elements to practical urban design, which I overcame by researching real-world examples. This project has changed my perspective by showing me that sustainable urbanization isn’t just about building smarter cities—it’s about honoring people, places, and data together.

vihaa - Designing this infographic helped me understand how global population growth and urbanization are deeply connected to cultural sustainability. I began by researching population trends and used the 1-1-1-4 model to show how growth is uneven across regions. It was fascinating to use math to calculate future projections and show them visually with a bar chart, making complex numbers easier to comprehend For the urbanization challenges, I wanted to make the information clear and eye-catching. I used icons to show problems like slums, poor housing, and water shortages. It helped me see how visuals can make social issues more relatable and memorable. One of the most exciting parts was exploring different case studies like Rani ki Vav (India), Valparaíso (Chile), and Fez (Morocco). These examples showed how heritage and city development can work together. When thinking about solutions, I didn’t want a boring list, so I turned it into a simple, colorful section with emojis and short lines. I added a pie chart to break down how budgets are often spent when cities plan with culture in mind. Overall, this project helped me practice combining math and integrated humanities

Rather, it could act as the cause of natural disasters. Population growth was one topic that was mentioned in this task time and time again. This helped me gain insight into the outside world and how the world's population is growing at an alarming rate.

Math Integration: Population growth was a task that not only involved social studies and sciences, but also mathematics. Looking at my infographic, mathematics played a vital role in determining the projected population in 2050, and by determining by how much it will grow. In essence, math helped in providing insight into population growth by adding graphs and pie charts on population.

What challenges did you face: In this task, I feel that the hardest challenge for me was adding the bar graph. This is because finding reliable graphs and information online is always a task in itself. This is because there are multiple biased or unreliable sources. While others can be outdated as well. To overcome this, I looked at multiple, credible sources for information, until I found the graph on a trusted website.

How has this project changed your perspective on urban sustainability: This project provided me a broader scope on a wide topic - urban sustainability and population growth. The main informative part about this was the graph. This is because the graph was fairly simple to understand, while still being a reliable source.

While making this infographic, I learned many different things related to other cultures, how cities develop, and the different issues in sustainable urbanization. Throughout this project, there were lots of key insights, I learned how important sustainable urbanization is as the population is growing quickly, especially in developing countries, as well as the different issues that they face along the way of sustainable urbanization. With the help of mathematics, I could analyze and explain the data better as well as understand it myself. It also helps me understand how resources could be planned better with the help of percentages and statistics. A challenge that I faced was finding reliable information that could help me connect urban planning with culture. However, to solve this issue, I made sure that I would stick to trusted and government sites. Finally, this project has changed my perspective by showing me how sustainable cities and urban planning aren't just about making the buildings and going ahead with the plan, it's also about the people, culture, and smart planning, and has shown me that culture and math are key points to building better sustainable cities
