Sparta was better place to live around 435B.C.E. than Athens. Sparta was a strong, healthy, and self sufficient society. It was a military power house built up by each individual. Each male was born to be soldier. Females were raised to be strong by playing games. Their goal was to be strong mothers who could bear even stronger children to benefit society as a whole. Every individual found pride in their contribution to society. As stated by the Spartan women Cassandra in the reading, "We Spartans are very proud of our way of life. We are disciplined people who can make do with very little, and cam take care of ourselves." The Spartans we're proud to be self sufficient and their actions were aimed to further advance the success of their society.

Athens was a much better place to live in than Sparta. Every citizen had a chance to become a government official. They had many schools with teachers who had knowledge to teach the younger ones. Every individual was treated with respect. Athenians stressed individual thought above the group. Not everything was based off of one person or group. Everyone could chip in their ideas. As the Athenian man Milo said , "Athens could never become a great city-state unless all of its citizens were treated fairly."

You said that every citizen had the ability to become a government official, but in the ready it say, " all adult males voted" this excludes women from participating. In Sparta, women had equal opportunities in feilds like business, unlike Athenian women who not allowed to participate in public events. Also young girls were not treated equally. They were not permit to attend school and they were expected to stay home and keep the house.

That may be true, but as stated by the Spartian woman Cassandra, "If a child is born sickly, it is taken to a mountainside and left to die." You say it is bad that Athenian girls are not allowed to participate in political situations and not allowed to go to school, but the Spartans are not much better. We do not kill off children because they are not strong enough to be a Spartan. Also, in the article about Athens it says, "Some women did learn to read and write at home." Even though, girls did not attend school, they did get some education at home.
