An Angling Licence is required to fish with a rod, reel and line at any inland water in Tasmania(including farm dams on private property) during the angling season that applies to that water. A licence is not required by people under 14 years of age or when fishing at a registered private fishery or fishing for bream in specified bream waters which are listed in the Inland Fisheries Act 1995. It is a condition of the Angling licence that the holder complies with the regulations governing recreational fishing under the Inland Fisheries Act 1995, Inland Fisheries (Recreational Fishing) Regulations 2009and subsequent Orders. Complete versions of this legislation can be viewed on-line at www.thelaw.tas.gov.au .

To read in brief the practical guide to rules and regulations of the current angling season look at and/or download the Tasmanian Inland fishing code.

Inland waters include all waters on the inland side of the Seaward Limit, which is the boundary between marine and inland waters. The seaward limits are generally marked by a physical structure like a bridge, road or white posts.

The regulations relate to individual waters and cover the open season dates, fishing method (bait, lure or fly fishing), and catch limits (fish bag and size). The general rules that apply to most inland waters are:

The open season is in line with the brown trout season from the first Saturday nearest the start of August to the Sunday closest to the end of April each year

It is open to all methods of fishing (bait, artificial lure and fly) and

The catch limits are 12 fish bag and a minimum size of 220 mm in length.

A small number of waters have restricted access for anglers with a disability or junior anglers, and some waters are closed at all times or closed for specific periods. A comprehensive list of inland waters and the regulations that apply to each is available on the Inland Waters Database.

Only a private fishery registered by the Service can charge a fee to fish and set rules for the fishery. Private owners, local councils or management authorities control access to some Tasmanian waters. You should check with the owner of private property before entering their land.

A separate Whitebait Licence is required for whitebait fishing and specific regulations govern the recreational Whitebait Fishery, which operates from 1 October to 11 November each year.
