Following the American Revolution (1775-1783), interest grew in developing distinctly American styles and symbols. National pride was strong, and Americans adopted a new style of architecture that reflected confidence in their newly won independence. The style was named in honor of the Federal form of government in the US. It was popular between 1780-1840. A house built in this style has a box-like shape, is symmetrical, has double-hung sash windows, and is at least two stories high. Sometimes a small portico was added to the main entrance. A portico is an open space covered with a roof supported by columns. It also had pediments, roof-like decorations that are found over the portico, window, or door.
