In order to conduct a research, the following must first be understood:

• A research question/topic must be formulated. The question/ topic must be specific to the problem being researched and not too broad and/or vague.
• Understanding the reason behind the research; your motivation can affect your research design, data collection and analysis method.
• Depending on the nature of the research, a research type - exploratory, descriptive, or casual - must be chosen.
• Differentiating between a deductive or inductive reasoning allows you to identify the order in which the theory is created.
• A theory is perceived as the researcher's explanation/answer to the research question/topic.
• A research strategy must be identified in order to know what type of data is to be collected and the best method.
