It was the headquarters of the U.S. Pacific Fleet when, on Sunday morning, December 7, 1941, Japanese bombers and fighter planes attacked. Two waves of Japanese aircraft destroyed many U.S. ships and 180 aircraft. When the attack was over, more than 2,300 military personnel were dead, and another 1,100 were wounded. The following day, President Roosevelt addressed Congress and the American people. He called December 7 "a date which shall live in infamy." Congress then declared war on Japan.
