If I had to pick a private to come with me, I would bring Private Pierre Cruzatte. Pierre Cruzatte is intelligent and fluent in languages that were very useful towards the expedition. He was also a former trader and knew Missouri very well. Cruzatte was also very knowledgeable about geography. He also was very skilled in the musical area, he would play his fiddle and it would help lift others spirits up.

Pierre Cruzatte was very fluent with his frontier languages which came in use when the Corps would come across various tribes. With Cruzatte’s knowledge of Missouri and with his fluency in frontier languages he was able to scout out the Missouri Indians and Oto. Not only was Cruzatte was able to translate but, he was also able to bring useful gifts to trade with the tribes. This lead to Americans being able to peacefully enter the northern part of Missouri.

Along our journey we have found a plant in the rocky and dry forest area it is called the blue huckleberry. The plant is has many branches and is formed like a shrub. The leaves are green, smooth, and are about 1.5 inches. The buds of the plant are little, red, and are shaped like a bell all down the branches. Depending on the size of the branches depended on how many buds there were, the longer the branch the more buds there were. When the plants had fully grown they were small, round, berries that are blue. These small berries are edible and they are the Native Americans’ and some other local animals’ favorites as well.

As we were going along our way on this journey, in Chamberlain, South Dakota we saw something that we have never seen before. This animal is a coyote, it looks pretty similar to a dog and it is about the same size as a dog. This animal has gray fur and it’s legs are a darker yellow, they also have a bushy tail with a black tip on their tail. We like to call these animals “prairie wolves”. We often find them in open plains and in brush areas.

Whether or not Lewis and Clark came across the Shoshones was a crucial part of their journey, as Lewis wrote in his journal, “If we do not find [the Shoshones], I fear the successful issue of our voyage will be very doubtful.” At first when Lewis and his men came upon the Shoshones, the Shoshones were fearful of them till they dropped their guns and gave them gifts. The Shoshones gave them food and tepees to stay in, they were the first white people they had ever seen. The Shoshones also told Lewis and his men that their was not one water route that could take them all the way to the Pacific Ocean. The Shoshones provided Lewis and Clark with horses for the mountainous trek. Lewis told the Shoshones that when they returned, “Whitemen would come to them with a number of guns and every other article necessary to their defense and comfort.”
