Basic Job Description

A newsies job was basically to buy newspapers in the morning, and sell them throughout the day. They would stand on the curbs shouting "Extra! Extra! Read all about it!" Sometimes, they wouldn't sell all of the papers they bought, and would suffer a loss of the ones that they didn't sell. They would roam the streets everyday, and it was tiring and potentially dangerous. That is a basic description of a newsies job.

This picture is related to our project because it shows a major tragedy. The picture features young kids smoking cigarettes. They are at a very young age to be doing this and it can be extremely harmful to their health. A quote from www.theatlantic.com: "look more like little adults than children... smoking cigarettes, wearing suits, holding stacks of newspapers, and looking worn out from a long day of work. ... it's not hard to imagine a bottle of bourbon resting behind them" This quote explains this picture and how this is a major tragedy.

A real world connection to the kids of today would be doing chores for money. Most kids do not like to do chores so some parents will pay their child money so they could clean their room or wash the dishes. This can be related to Newsies because both children who sold newspapers and children who did chores were paid money.

Challenges faced

Life as a newsie wasn't easy. Though it may have not been prominent, kidnapping was still an issue. Another challenge was the weather. The kids would have to stand out in the rain, in the snow, in the hot, and in the cold, just to earn a few dollars each day. Disease is a big issue as well. With so many people around, especially in the winter, in was easier to catch a cold or fever. Most families depended on the kids for money for food everyday. Healthcare was also not affordable. Being out on the streets all day also prevented the children from getting an education, so many people weren't successful when they grew up.
