I was aware these standards existed, however, I never paid much attention to them due to the fact that my class attends computer classes weekly. The computer teacher sent us these standards at the beginning of the year and spends the year planning her curriculum around it. However, I'm sure I should be more aware of them as they can be applied in all subject areas. One of the standards I found that I always use in my classroom is: 3-5.NC.2- Use productivity technology tools (e.g., word processing, spreadsheet, presentation software) for individual and collaborative writing, communication, and publishing activities. After every novel a reading group completes in class, the group uses computers to complete a culminating writing project together. The group uses Google Docs in real-time to complete different parts of their project. The students have to collaborate on certain sections together as well.

I chose a data analysis standard to use with technology. The standard is: 4.DA.1: Formulate questions that can be addressed with data. Use observations, surveys, and experiments to collect, represent, and interpret the data using tables (including frequency tables), line plots, and bar graphs. I think social media could easily be used to conduct surveys among their peers. Twitter and Facebook have very easy survey tools within their websites. However, students could also create their own survey on Survey Monkey, for example and include it in an Instagram post or an email. Students could then create their own graphs or tables in a tool like Google Docs or Microsoft Word. I have also used the site below with my class while practicing bar graphs.

I really liked the Instagram account that combine different stories of 1:1 classrooms . My school is not a 1:1 school, but our high school is quickly moving in that direction. I think it is important that the teachers on the elementary side of our corporation prepare our students for when they do move on to a 1:1 atmosphere. I think by following this account, I can gather more ideas of how other teachers use technology to effectively teach different concepts and ideas. I could then help better prepare my students for their future in the high school and keep consistency throughout our school corporation. I would love to hear stories or see lessons from other teachers who successfully teach in a 1:1 classroom.

I think in general, social media is important in my classroom because it allows students to work with familiar tools, while still creating meaningful work individually or with other students. It allows creativity, participation, and communication with others.

I think I may try Symbaloo with my students. I think it would be beneficial for my class, but also for myself. I think we use a lot of different websites for learning and I often have to write them on the board for the students to copy down. If the websites were neatly organized and saved for the students, we would save so much time. It takes a lot of time to get computers passed out, mice plugged in, and websites entered. I think Symbaloo would be a great time saver and it would be beneficial for students who like things to be organized or for those who struggle with learning how to organize things.

I looked at the 5th grade community and immediately saw a post for an issue my team and I were talking about recently regarding the challenges of teaching 5th grade social studies in Indiana. I think this is a great community because all of the teachers on it are teaching the same standards that I am and it would be nice to talk to other educators about challenges or get new ideas from each other.

I want to try Tackk because another teacher in my building has her students use it to build portfolios of their work while incorporating different media tools. I think it would be a good way to store student writing. I also think they would enjoy keeping their writing and looking back on previous assignments.
