His four sisters lived in arozona. Derek went to st. Augustine, it was a small catholic school through eighth grade, he was called nicknames like "Oreo cookie", to "zebra" and even worse. Derek's parents Charles and dot wanted him to go to catholic school for ninth grade but he didn't want to. Derek's parents finally let him go to Kalamazoo central high school but there were 3 rules. Derek was determined to get better at baseball. in senior year Derek was 6'3". in high school he threw a 93 mph ball. DEREK homered the first two games of the season. more than 40 scouts went to go see Derek play, he had a 508 batting average, 23 RBI's.
