Were the Mongols good or evil? That is the question that many have pondered over the years in regards to this hell raising group of nomads that conquered much of Asia over the course of 25 years. However, many feel the good things they did outweighed the bad. What is your position? Make your 1st post (10-12 sentences) discussing your opinion while backing up your opinion with facts/evidence from the videos, notes, and DBQ activity we did in class. You will also need to respond to 2 other classmates posts (3-5 sentences each) making a total of 3 posts on the Padlet forum. All three of your posts are due by Tuesday 10/25 by midnight.

While it is highly debated that the Mongols were good or bad. In my opinion the Mongols were a brutal and unmerciful empire. There are numerous examples of their evil throughout their history. One of these is given in document D. It states that they would shoot napalm and burning fat to burn their enemies alive in sieges. Document E helps us perceive the massacre that Mongolians were responsible for. In Baghdad alone there was a reported 800,000-2mil. deaths due to Mongols. In the Chin empire there was a counted 50million peoples; yet after the mongols came they counted a population of only nine million. This means that there was a death rate of almost 20 percent. These are just a few of the numerous examples explaining why the Mongols were bad and evil.

I think the Mongol Tribe were evil barbarians. I think this because the Mongols were responsible for 40 million deaths, where people were tortured, buried in the ground upside down, skull piles, etc. (Crash Course) The Mongols are also responsible for the spread of the Black Death. Although the mongols improved trading for a brief moment, the trading posts were the reason the Black Death spread so quickly (crash course). The Mongols conquered 4,860,000 square miles. invading cities such as Riazan, Kolumna, Suzdal, Kieve, Silesia, and so many more (doc A & E). The Mongols also forced their soldiers to fight and wouldn't let them surrender, if a solider tried to surrender he would be killed (powerpoint). The Mongols killed everyone and everything including animals such as dogs and cats. invaded Chinese cities say "Mongol slaughter was so great the streets were said to be greasy with human flesh (background essay). Though the Mongols improved some things economically, the lives taken by the Mongols are too grave to outlay the good they did. In conclusion, the Mongols are evil Barbarians.

I believe that the Mongols were evil, and here is why. The Mongol's goal was to claim territory all around the world and they would do anything to achieve their goal, no matter how aggressive or violent it was. "The Mongols were violent and bloodthirsty." (Crash Course Video) Whenever the Mongols wanted to conquer land/cities they would do it in the most violent way possible. The Mongols were known around the world for their harsh brutality. "Mongol Slaughter was so great that the streets were said to be greasy with human fat and flesh." ( Page 2/ background essay) Although the Mongols had a peaceful time (Pax Mongolia) the majority of their reign was violent and evil. The Mongols had certain advantages technology-wise to help them. "Operating from the backs of horses and sometimes using giant siege weapons." ( Page 1/ background essay) The use of horses and siege weapons provided an advantage over other groups by giving the Mongols good transportation/communication and strong weapons to help them conquer cities. Overall the Mongols were evil.

The Mongols were evil for many reasons. One of the most important reasons why the Mongols were evil was because they would take the lives of innocent people and say they did it for conquering territory (Crash Course). This is evil because these innocent people don't deserve to be murdered since they have done nothing wrong, to begin with. For my second reason, the Mongols were responsible for the death of over 40 million people (Doc 4). This is definitely evil because at no point ever should someone be the reason for 40 million deaths across the earth. These people were killed at the expense of the Mongols which proves exactly why they were evil.

There are many things I could say for why the Mongols were good but I have to start somewhere. One specific reason the Mongols were a good part in history was because they actually increased trade and opened up safe ways to trade around the world and made it possible to go from one side of Asia to the other (Crash Course). This is good because throughout history we have built off of that and expanded thoughts and ideas that were initially based off the Mongols ideas to begin with. My second reason for why the Mongols were good is that with history you can learn a lot. Everyone knows that the reason you learn history is so history doesn't repeat itself (Crash Course). Knowing what the Mongols did, everyone can learn from their mistakes and learn what went wrong and start to adapt and change so history won't repeat itself.

I think the Mongols were evil because they killed a bunch of people. The slide show said, "They killed about 40 million people". The slideshow also said, "They spread the Black Death by keeping trade routes open". According to, "How Barbaric were the Mongols", Cities were set on fire and they raped a bunch of people. Also According to "How Barbaric were the Mongols", "All men over the age of 14 were expected to join the military". They also said, "Mongol slaughter was so great the streets were said to be greasy with human fat and flesh". According to the slide show the mongols defeated an army of 75,000. These are just some of the reasons why the mongols were evil. They raped a lot of women and destroyed a lot of lives. They also burned down towns. Also the crash course video said, About 15-20% of the world's population is related to him. These are all reasons why the Mongols were evil.

A nomadic people called the Mongols, In the 1200s of Central Asia, would suddenly burst into the world as a new empire. They did many good and bad through their conquest but through it all I think the Mongols were evil. First, they burned down cities and just left them. (Mongol PP). They also were the reason for spreading the black death around europe causing millions of deaths. (Mongol PP). Not only did that cause many deaths but their leader, Genghis Khan, is responsible for killing 40 million people. (Mankind). They were also very cruel people throughout their rain of power, for example, they made a tower of skulls after slaughtering a whole village. (Mankind). They showed no mercy as they would chase people, while on horses, and fire them with arrows. (Mankind). They used siege warfare and gunpowder to defeat their enemies, being very cruel while doing so. (Mongol PP). They also conquered 4.5 million miles of land, taking that away from many people. (Mankind). Genghis was also a very terrible person, rapeing many women. Mongol PP). As you can tell from what I said, the mongol are very evil people.

I believe the Mongols were evil and here are the reasons why. To start off, the Mongols were lead by a very evil leader who wanted the entire world similar to Hitler. And Genghis Khan wanted to kill his enemies and watch their beloved weep as he takes all their possessions and embraces his enemies wives and daughters (Mongols PP) which is very unnecessary and only causes more suffering. To further show the evil heart of Genghis Khan, throughout his entire reign he had killed a total of 40 million people on his quest to conquer the world (Mankind Video, The Mongols). Genghis Khan was never satisfied with a good portion of land for his people, he wanted more and was willing to ruin lives, cause suffering, and kill to do that (Document E). Genghis Khan has also raped enough women for 1 in 200 people to have his genes. 60,000 women would rather die than be raped by The Mongols (Mankind Video, The Mongols). The Mongols themselves were also very evil partly due to their corrupted leader but none the less they would slaughter and burn down entire villages(Mongols PP). The Mongols would slaughter anybody, even women, children, baby's, and pets. The Mongols would kill hundreds of thousands and even millions with no mercy(Document E). Genghis Khan, their leader also lacked ethics doing adultery and theft which were both executable offenses to the Mongols once again showing his tyrant and evil nature(Document K). The Mongols would stack body's of dead in piles and sever their heads showing more violent and evil nature. The Mongol's also burned prisoners live while hanging them upside down which is unnecessary for it only caused excessive suffering showing more evil intent. Overall the Mongols caused more suffering than they did good due to their corrupted leader and violent nature.

I believe the Mongols were evil here are some reasons why. First, Kahoot said, "they killed 40 million people". According to the Mongol's PowerPoint, they also spread the Black death. The PowerPoint also states that Mongols burned down any city that resisted surrender. According to the article, How Barbaric are the Mongols, " Mongol slaughter was so great that the streets were said to be greasy with human fat and flesh". The Article also states, "All men over the age of 14 were expected to join the military". According to the crash course video. also said that Ghengis khan the Mongol leader raped so many women that he is believed to be related to 15- 20% of the world is related to him. The Mongols also conquered land stretching from modern China to the middle east and Russia. They laid waste to multiple empires and cities that didn't surrender(Mongols pp). According to the slideshow, the Mongols also defeated an army of 75,000 people. Those are some of the reasons I think the Mongols were evil.

The mongols were a strong fierce empire, who terrorised many people. Yet I believe the actions of the Mongols after genghis khan's death lead me to believe they are good. After their leaders death they were very accepting of others actions and policies. One example of this can be found in the crash course video, we are told they would allowed the leader to stay in power if they obeyed their rules. They were also very accepting of religions and gender equality (doc c). Although those are very good, the best thing they did was protect traders along trade routes. Traders and travelers were very vulnerable to attacks and theft, but with the Mongols protection traders were safe (c.c. video; multiple doc). Many would argue that they were evil because they killed villages. What they fail to realize is that according to the crash course they gave villages a chance to surrender. Another bad thing is the spreading of the black plague. Now it is true that they help spread the plague they were not the soul reason for its massive outbreak. In conclusion the good from after Khan's death outweighs the bad from his rule as leader.

Their killings lead to everyone in China fearing them and usually surrendering. Not to mention the number of women they raped. it is said that 8% of the world's population is directly related to The Mongols. 1/200 people are related to Genghis Khan himself. They also are believed to have spread the plague to Europe. leading to the deaths of nearly half of Europe. This plague brought upon a dark age in Europe leading to lots of sadness. Finally, they were known for their violent nature and punishment, they would leave piles of skulls, leaving piles of dead bodies, hang prisoners upside down to torture them, and never leave anyone alive if a city didn't surrender(video).

They rapped lots of women too every day. They went to cities and towns throughout the Middle East and Russia on horses and conquered all of them. Not only did they just kill people but they built and owned weapons to take down cities like battering rams and gunpowder. Although not intended, they spread the black death. It spread through trade that killed around 75-200 million people. And later used the black death to their advantage to kill their enemies. Genghis khan ruled his people to take over everything that stood in their path no matter what it was. Just to put into perspective how much land they conquered, they took over 4,860,000 square miles in about 26 years which is bigger than the United States.(kahoot) With the amount of land, they took over they also killed more than 40 million people.(Doc 4) The Mongols were nowhere near good and can't be because they had no respect for other people.

In doc H it states that Genghis Khan reduced crimes in china by half, and prohibited settling on farmers land. Buddhist monasteries were exempt from taxes. To control that much land, the Mongols needed to control the people. They did that by enforcing rules to keep crime rates down, and protect religions cultures. It was a very diverse place where anyone could choose whatever religion they want. In document N, it say that the Mongols were strict on drinking laws. They wanted to protect their people. The Mongols had a time of peace called Pax Mongolia where there was peace (Crash Course). In conclusion, the Mongols were good. It wasn't uncommon to take over cities. It was what you did for power. The Mongols were good.

I believe the mongols were evil, here are some of the reasons why I believe that. First off genghis khan raped many women and would take wives and daughters of defeated enemies for his own personal harem (video). 60,000 women killed themselves because they did not want to be raped by the mongols (video). they also killed millions of people and burned towns and cities to the ground if they didn't surrender. It is said that he killed 40,000,000 people which is about as much as Adolf Hitler (video). they conquered anyone they could, conquering 4,860,000 sq miles (doc A). he is a quote from a primary source "All men over the age of fourteen were expected to undertake military duty. Only physicians, undertakers and priests were exempt," (doc B). When they are in battle, if one or more out of a group of ten run away, all are put to death (Doc C). "The Mongols would make towers with skulls, decapitate prisoners, slaughter children"(Crash Course). They had killed over 40 million people with no mercy. "They used siege warfare and gunpowder to defeat their enemies."(Mongol PP). They used thousands of horses to travel faster and have the upperground in battles. They conquered twice the size of the United States. They also spread the Black death, killing many people. They were violent and everyone was scared of them.

The horrible things the mongols did over power any good they did in the world, leading me to believe they were evil. A major factor indicating their cruelty is the fact the killed 40 million people, slaughtering men, woman, and kids. (Mankind video) Well they contributed in safley expanding trade and widening their empire, that doesn't stop the fact that they ended millions of lives doing it. Well they were attempting to take over the world, they burned down cities that got in their way and didn't surrender. (Crash course) Genghis Khan also raped millions of women on his journey. About 1 in every 200 people have a gene from Genghis Khan, really putting it in perspective how many women he raped. In history, we can compare Genghis Khan to hitler. Hitler is an evil person in society, and nobody thinks he did anything good when he killed millions doing it. This should lead Genghis Khan to be viewed as just as cruel. With a cruel leader, you will have a cruel and sick empire. All these reasons clearly show how truly evil the mongols were.

The Mongols also forced chinese engineers to build battle rams to break into their own city. The Mongols killed men, women, and children and raped women. (Mankind) They would slaughter people to the point in cities where the streets would be, "greasy with fat/flesh." (Mankind) The Mongols also spread the black plague along trade routes resulting in many more deaths. (crashcourse) The Mongols would burn cities to the ground if they resisted. More than 11 different cities fell due to the mongols. (powerpoint) The Mongols conquered 4.5 million square miles. The Mongols would leave nothing alive, they killed dogs, cats, and other animals. Even if the Mongol soldiers tried to retreat they would be killed by the other soldiers. (powerpoint) In conclusion, the Mongols were very evil people.

Were the Mongols good or evil? While the Mongols were conquesting new land and expanding their territory they soon got a bad reputation. But that didn't stop them from doing good things as well. They allowed other religions to be practiced even when captured.(Crashcourse) They also shared food when in short supply.
(Doc J) They even led to way for future empires to follow, they give positions away based on how hard and good you worked not on your family's position (Crashcourse) Even gave women rights when no other empire was. When conquesting new territory the area seemed to thrive. The trade industry was the most impacted from canals being built to allow communication and transportation to be easily accessible.(Doc J) The Persian silk industry flourished when the Mongols came because they opened trade from China.(Doc J) Through the open trade they kept open technology and goods were easily spread, we still use some of them today like gunpowder, paper and the printing press. (Mankind video) The Mongols became one of the fastest growing empiries of all time they were able to conquest more territory in 25 years than the Romans did in 400 years. (Mankind video) Their territory spread over 4 and 1/2 square miles.(ManKind video) This was able to happen because of how good they treated their people.

The Mongols were exceedingly terrible people. To even start his empire, Genghis Khan killed the leaders of the other clans on the plains of Mongolia (CC Video). He then began his conquest of Asia by attacking China. He forced captured Chinese prisoners, many of whom ended up dying in the battle at the hands of their own people, to build and operate siege weapons, such as battering rams, for him in order to break through the main gate of the capital city. Also, Genghis Khan and the Mongols raped many of the women in the towns and cities they conquered. Thousands of women committed suicide to escape being raped by Genghis Khan (Man Kind Video). After conquering towns and cities, killing all who lived in them, including children, the Mongols would often decapitate the dead body that lay in the street and pile their heads up into bloody mounds. They made separate mounds for the heads of men and the heads of women and children. The Mongols also tortured many people by burying them upside down while they were still alive. There were many towns that were so afraid of them, they surrendered without a fight (SS). You may argue that the Mongols were good because they had a high tolerance of other religions or because they reinvigorated many trade routes, but these things are all greatly outweighed by the 40,000,000 people they brutally slaughtered and the thousands of innocent women that they raped, as well as the fact that those reopened trade routes were the most likely thing to have transported the Black Death, which also killed many millions of people, to Europe (SS and Man Kind Video.

While many people believe that the Mongols were evil, this statement is not true. The Mongols did many things that made them good. First, the Mongols treated people fairly in their conquered territory. They allowed religions to remain the same and local rulers stayed in power (Crash Course). The Mongols also helped improve transportation, communication, and boosted economies by building canals and blending with different societies (Document J). These societies flourished after being conquered by the Mongols; especially during Pax Mongolia, a period of peace (Background Essay). The Mongols had military and leadership skills (PowerPoint). They also united China as a country after 300 years (Background Essay). Although many people would say that the Mongols were cruel to cities that they forcefully conquered, cities that surrendered were welcomed into the Mongol Empire (PowerPoint and Document E). By these reasons, the Mongols were not evil, but good.

Many people believe the Mongols were evil because of all the conquering killing they did but I think the mongols were not evil, but good. Here are some reasons why, The mongols had religious freedoms, (Crash course #11), you were allowed to follow any religion under the rule of the mongols. This shows how they were good considering most other rulers didn't have religious freedoms. Also, The mongols didn't only care about wealth and family status. Promotions were acquired from your performance and skill. (Crash Course). The mongols were also responsible for building canals. these canals helped with communication and transportation of goods and people(Doc J). The mongols conquest helped the Persian wine making thrive as well as the Persian silk industry, because of contacts that opened up with china, due to these canals.(Doc J). the Mongol Empire made significant contributions to the political institutions, economic development, and cultural diversity of many lands.(Doc J). Another positive thing Genghis Khan did was root out adultery and theft. War, strife, bodily harm or murder does not exist, robbers and thieves on a grand scale are not to be found among them (Doc K). This shows how the mongols were primarily good even though they did some bad things.

Were the Mongols good or evil? Although some may believe that they were good people, many think otherwise because of the cruelty throughout Genghis Khan's conquest to try and conquer the entire world. For example in his lifetime the “Great Kahn” was responsible for over 40 million people (doc) leaving him on the top five worst people in the world (cc). Not only did he kill people but buried some alive leaving fear into the next victim in his way. Along his journey he raped so many woman that in the world today one in 200 people have some of Gengis Kahns DNA (cc). Another thing to consider is when he did find a city that wouldn't agree to his terms he would kill all of them no matter what they said or did. This includes women and children/ babies (doc). Brutally murdering his enimes and burning their entire village down. When he was done with a city he would make a pile of the skulls as a sign of victory (cc). After most of his conquest he offered to protect the silk road and other trade routes which seems good until you realize that it's the reason the black death killed another 25 million people during the pandemic (video).

They had many good deeds that they did too. They were some of the most gender equal people in the world at the time. It didn't matter your gender to them anyone could almost be anything.(crash course) They made the trade routes very safe for people. there was a saying "you could hold a gold bar above your head and walk away safe." this shows how well protected the routes were. gangis khan was able to protect everyone greatly.(crash course) He gave villages opportunities to surrender to them before they came in. most people wouldn't let them know they were even coming.(crash course) He let them keep their local leaders. Instead of killing them they allowed them to live and still rule. They just had to say he was their overall leader and you could survive. (crash course)

The Mongolian Empire was one of the most successful empires known in history and they treated the people in their empire fairly well. But the way they used brutal tactics and wiped out many cities to make people join them is what made the Mongols evil. The Mongols captured so much land in so little time by horse. This gave cities little time to react and prepare. Mongols always gave cities a chance to surrender to them, but if they didn’t, they would slaughter everyone. They made stacks of skulls and would put little kids' heads on the end of spears. On top of that, Genghis Khan, who was the leader of it all, raped so many women that ⅓ of today's population is related to him. When cities were attacked, women preferred to take their own life rather than being taken control of. And with Genghis Khan being the leader, women were looked down upon and treated badly in the Mongol empire. Men were allowed to have as many wives as wanted, some had up to one hundred. The Mongols had awful tactics on taking over and wiping out cities but they would also have people turn against each other in their city. It is estimated that the Mongols killed over forty million people which is equivalent to wiping out the entire population of California. Although the Mongol Empire let people be free for the most part, the way they increased their empire was evil and generations of generations were wiped out just like it was nothing.
