The "Tutor"

I essentially wanted a bot that could serve as a tutor for master’s students in bilingual and ESL education. To start, I prompted it to be friendly, empathetic, and professional; more of a mentor than just a tutor. I also asked it to offer responses that are accessible, culturally sensitive, and unbiased. I wanted it to use examples, case studies, stories, analogies, and visuals to make things clearer and easier to understand. The initial prompt wasn’t overly detailed, but the AI performed pretty well overall. It just needs some refinement to make the responses even better. It was a fun experiment. :)

Here’s the link to my FrameVR destination: https://framevr.io/homesweethome

Here’s a screenshot of the prompt behind the “Tutor,” developed with the AI NPC TOTALLER framework in mind, created and authored by Helena Galani (2024).

Here’s how I used the framework to create the “Tutor” prompt:

Task (Type of task and activity):
I focused on making the task interactive and engaging. The tutor helps master's students in bilingual and ESL education by guiding them through complex questions with tools like case studies, analogies, and examples. The goal was to make learning dynamic, not just answer questions.

Objective (Goal of the responses):
I wanted the tutor to be more of a mentor, not just providing answers, but guiding students toward a deeper understanding and boosting their confidence in what they know.

Target (Who the NPC communicates with):
The students are at the master’s level, so I tailored the responses to be specialized yet accessible. The tutor’s role is to meet them where they are academically and provide thoughtful, relevant guidance.

Actor (Who the NPC acts as):
The tutor needed to be empathetic, patient, and professional, like a mentor who is both friendly and authoritative. I wanted the tone to be warm and approachable, while still providing expert guidance.

Learner (Level and existing knowledge):
Since these are advanced learners, I made sure the tutor’s responses are sophisticated but understandable, building on their existing knowledge with deeper insights.

Lesson Aims (and expected outcomes):
The aim is for students to not only grasp the material but to retain it long-term. The tutor’s role is to encourage active learning and mastery of the content.

Expectations (of learner pragmatic knowledge):
I acknowledged the unique challenges bilingual and ESL students might face, so the prompt reflects a culturally sensitive approach, offering answers that are authentic and thoughtful.

Register and Style of the NPC Language:
I aimed for a conversational, yet professional tone. The language is warm, engaging, and clear, striking a balance between approachability and academic seriousness.

By using this framework, I think I was able to successfully create a tutor prompt that’s supportive, interactive, and tailored to master’s students in bilingual and ESL education!

Charles Dickens

When asked to create an agent, I immediately thought how nice it would be for my Italian teenage students to revise for their final-year exam asking questions to a character who knew all about Dickens. Having little time, as knowledge base I used the extensive article about Dickens you can find on Wikipedia (in class we had only read a passage from "Oliver Twist"). I also added the link to a YouTube video that I always show in class.

As personality keywords for my agent I chose "friendly, compassionate, humorous, wise". If you have a conversation with it, You will find he is in fact good-humored and kind.

The main prompt runs as follows:

"You are the old and popular writer Charles Dickens.

You are very willing to inform everybody about your life, works, opinions and writing style, so you like asking visitors questions about yourself.

In particular, you are eager to know if the person chatting with you is a student, as you love to ask students to help with their tests and exams.

You act as Dickens, who could not stand people's suffering and specially children suffering. You are committed to improving this world and to making people empathize with their neighbors. You really believe that the world is going to improve, as people are essentially good. You like joking and giving people funny names that summarize their basic traits.

If you can spot a grammar mistake in the language used by the person speaking with you, gently correct it, as you are always helpful with the English language, of which you are a master."

In fact, the agent only corrects very serious mistakes!

If you want to have a try before I close public access to the agent (a possibility that is extremely important to a teacher like me, who also works with minors), go to https://framevr.io/luciasframe
