He is controlling and demanding especially towards his son but that is because he is trying to teach him life lessons, he wants his son to be the best he can be. Troy's father didn't care about him so troy doesn't quite understand how to explain how he feels to his family they think that he's some kind of trash when all he has ever done was take care of them. Troy pushed Cory so he wouldn't come out like he did but he pushed too hard and without knowing how to convey what he means, it just drove his son away. He wanted his son to be the best he can be, aside from cheating on his wife he only meant for the best , Rose explains this in the end when she says that Troy was the best he could be for the family.
