         <description><![CDATA[<div><br>Of all the Chinese communites at the Middle Road , the Hainanese was the largest. It's enclave was near the army camps, Raffles Hotel and European churches. Extending along Beach Road towards North Bridge Road, the streets perpendicular to those two were called Hainanese First Street, Hainan Second Street and Hainan Third Street. These streets are now known as Middle Road, Purvis Street and Seah Street respectively. &nbsp;<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>First, a little bit about the Japanese migrants.<br><br>The first Japanese to migrate to Singapore was Yamamoto Otokichi in 1862. He died here in 1867. The Japanese introduced the rickshaw, or&nbsp;<em>Jinricksha</em>&nbsp;to the locals and by the early 20th century, the community had grown to 6950.<br><br>Come 1926, the Japanese Community had grown to occupy the area between the boundary of Prinsep Street, Rocher Road, North Bridge Road and Middle Road. They referred to Middle Road as&nbsp;<em>Chuo Dori,&nbsp;</em>" Central Street".</div>]]></description>
